Base: downtown near State Street, both nights. From central LA the drive takes about 2 hours on US-101, longer on Friday afternoons; the Pacific Surfliner train stops a few blocks from State Street if nobody wants to drive. The Courthouse is free to visit, with security screening at the entrance under the Great Arch. Pace: easy for a group: everything today is a short, flat walk, with long breaks for lunch and an early-evening drink before dinner.
The drive up and breakfast downtown
Leave LA early and follow US-101 north along the coast past Ventura and Carpinteria; the last half hour runs right beside the ocean. Park once at your hotel or in a city lot and leave the car; downtown, the waterfront and every Day 1 stop are on foot.
Where to eat: breakfast at Jeannine’s Bakery downtown, a restaurant and bakery with big plates for the table and pastries to share. Order a few things and split them.
The Santa Barbara County Courthouse
Walk to the Courthouse on Anacapa Street, a working county courthouse and National Historic Landmark finished in 1929 after the 1925 earthquake. Its white walls, stenciled wooden ceilings, tiled stairways and the sunken garden lawn are the clearest picture of how the city rebuilt in Spanish Colonial Revival style.
The building is free on weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no entry after 4:30. Climb to El Mirador, the clock tower lookout, for red-tile rooftops, palms, the harbor and the mountains in every direction. Volunteer docents give free one-hour talks at 2 p.m. daily and at 10:30 a.m. on weekdays, starting in the Mural Room.
Expert tip: go up the tower in the morning. By afternoon the sun sits behind the harbor and haze flattens the view, and the lookout gets crowded when groups arrive.
A food-hall lunch and El Presidio
Where to eat: lunch at the Santa Barbara Public Market, a food hall on Chapala Street where each friend can pick a different counter and you meet back at one long table.
Afterward walk a few blocks to El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park on Cañon Perdido Street, the Spanish fort founded on April 21, 1782. The rebuilt chapel and adobe rooms are open 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; it is a short, quiet stop before the evening.
Tapas on State Street and an ice cream walk
Spend the late afternoon on State Street, where several blocks are closed to cars, browsing shops and stopping for a drink at a patio table.
Where to eat: dinner at Loquita, a Spanish restaurant for tapas and paella built for sharing, so order across the menu and pass plates around. Then walk to McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams for a scoop on the way back to the hotel.
