The idea

The direct answer: Austin is the rare trip where the group chat energy and the actual trip match. Four days in the city — South Congress, the Franklin Barbecue line, Barton Springs, East Austin honky-tonks — plus two day trips into the Hill Country: Hamilton Pool's waterfall grotto and Fredericksburg's wine country. Live music every night, tacos at every turn, and water you can actually swim in.

The route works because it never moves hotels. One Austin base for all five nights; the two day trips leave after breakfast and return by dinner. Days are built around one anchor each — a line, a pool, a dance floor — with the afternoons left loose for naps, patios, and whatever the group discovers. All costs are in USD, every deadline is named, and the pacing assumes adults who like their nights late.

Two ground rules make it work. Book Hamilton Pool the moment your dates are firm. Reservations are required daily — $12 per vehicle online plus $8 per adult cash at the gate — and weekend slots sell out weeks ahead. And respect the Franklin line. In line by 8:00–8:30am, closed Mondays, and everyone in your party has to be standing there. Do those two things and the rest of the week runs itself.

Planning the trip

Where the $1,400–$2,100 goes

Per person, group of 4, 6 days / 5 nights, flights excluded, all USD:

  • Lodging — $600–$900: a 3-bedroom Airbnb or two hotel rooms split four ways, five nights
  • Food & drink — $400–$550: tacos and food trucks most days, one nice dinner, honky-tonk drinks nightly
  • Activities — $150–$250: show covers ($5–30 a night), Barton Springs, kayak rental, wine tastings
  • Ground transport — $200–$300: one rental car split four ways (or rideshares), plus gas for two day trips
  • Fees & buffer — $50–$100: Hamilton Pool reservation and gate fees, parking, the pie stop

Pack for Austin

  • Swimsuit + quick-dry towel — Barton Springs is 68°F year-round and the lake is never far
  • Sun hat + reef-safe sunscreen — Hill Country sun bites even in shoulder season
  • Light layer — honky-tonks blast the AC; patios cool off fast after dark
  • Broken-in walking shoes — SoCo, East Austin, and downtown add up to 15,000+ steps a day
  • Portable charger — maps, Do512, and rideshares drain batteries by dinner
  • Small bills in cash — ~$10 covers at the clubs, $8/adult cash at the Hamilton Pool gate

Getting around

Austin is a driving city. Split one rental car four ways for the whole week — it's cheaper than rideshares once the two day trips are factored in. Downtown, SoCo, and Zilker are bikeable; everything else wants a car.

Group dynamics

Assign one friend the Franklin morning (they hold the group's place in spirit — everyone must be in line), one the Hamilton Pool reservation, and one the Day 6 driver. Three jobs, zero group-chat chaos.

When to go

Late March–May brings bluebonnets and bat season; October brings perfect patios. Summer works but it's a furnace — shift swimming to mornings. Winter is mild but the water still shocks.

Friends'-trip FAQs

When is the best time of year for this Austin friends' week?

Late March through May and October are the sweet spots: warm-enough swimming-hole water, peak live-music season, and — in spring — Hill Country bluebonnets. Summer works but it's genuinely hot (plan water activities for mornings); winter is mild on land, though Barton Springs still shocks at 68°F.

How far ahead do we need to book Hamilton Pool?

Weeks ahead, not days — weekend slots sell out. Reservations are required daily: book a morning (9am–12:30pm) or afternoon (2–5:30pm) slot online for $12 per vehicle, then pay $8 per adult in cash at the gate. No reservation means no entry, and they turn cars away daily.

What happened to Jacob's Well? Can we swim there instead?

No — swimming at Jacob's Well is cancelled until further notice (updated October 1, 2026), which is exactly why this itinerary uses Hamilton Pool instead. Don't build a day around it; check the Hays County site for any status change before a future trip.

How does the Franklin Barbecue line actually work with a group?

Everyone in your party must be standing in line — no holding spots for the whole crew. Get there by 8:00–8:30am (it opens at 11am), bring a camp chair, water, and sunscreen, and accept the 2–3 hour wait as a tailgate. The staff hands out free samples; brisket runs about $25 a pound. Closed Mondays — plan BBQ day for any other day.

Do we need a car in Austin?

For this itinerary, yes. Austin is a driving city, and Hamilton Pool (23 miles) plus Fredericksburg (80 miles) need wheels. Split one rental car four ways for the week — it's cheaper than rideshares once the day trips are factored in. Downtown, SoCo, and Zilker are bikeable; everything else wants a car.

What does this trip actually cost per person?

Roughly $1,400–$2,100 per person for a group of four, flights excluded: $600–900 lodging (split four ways), $400–550 food and drink, $150–250 activities and show covers, $200–300 ground transport, plus fees and buffer. The biggest lever is lodging — a 3-bedroom Airbnb split four ways beats two hotel rooms.

Where should a group of friends stay — SoCo, East Austin, or downtown?

SoCo if you want walkable music and patios (South Congress Hotel, Austin Motel); East Austin if you want value, food trucks, and style (Drifter Hotel, Arrive by Palisociety); downtown if you want central and don't mind paying for it. For this itinerary, SoCo or East Austin both work — you'll be driving to the day trips either way.

Is Austin all bars, or is there enough for non-drinkers?

Plenty. Barton Springs, kayaking Lady Bird Lake, the Hamilton Pool hike, murals, the Capitol, and early all-ages sets at the Continental Club are all alcohol-optional. The honky-tonk dance floors are about dancing, not drinking — and the Fredericksburg day works fine as a tasting-light food day.

What if it rains — does the plan fall apart?

Mostly no. The honky-tonks, tasting rooms, museums, and restaurants are indoors; Barton Springs stays open in rain unless there's lightning. The one fragile day is Hamilton Pool — heavy rain closes the preserve, so keep Day 5 swappable with Day 3 or Day 6 and check conditions that morning.

How much cash do we actually need?

Not much, but some: about $10 per person in small bills for club covers (Continental Club, White Horse — cash at the door), and $8 per adult in cash for the Hamilton Pool gate. Nearly everything else — restaurants, tastings, rideshares — takes cards.

Is Sixth Street worth it for our group?

Know which Sixth you mean. "Dirty Sixth" (the bar strip east of Congress) is chaotic and skippable for most groups. The live-music action is on East 6th, Red River, and South Congress — better bands, real dance floors, fewer headaches. This itinerary sticks to the good ones.

Can we do this trip as a long weekend instead of six days?

You can compress it to four: Day 1 (SoCo), Day 2 (Franklin + honky-tonk), Day 3 (Barton Springs + Zilker), Day 5 (Hamilton Pool) — and save Fredericksburg for next time. But the six-day version is the one where nobody's exhausted, and the wine day is worth the extra PTO.
