Base: downtown Ojai, both nights. From central LA the drive takes about 1½–2 hours on US-101 and Highway 33, up the Ventura River valley. Park once at your inn; downtown is a few flat blocks, and Libbey Park sits right across Ojai Avenue from the arcade, free to walk. Pace: easy on your own: a morning drive, then slow town walking with long café breaks and an early night after sunset.
The drive up and an organic breakfast
Leave LA after the morning rush and follow US-101 toward Ventura, then Highway 33 north into the hills. The road climbs gently past oak woodland and orchards, and the Topatopa Mountains appear ahead as a long, flat-topped wall.
Where to eat: breakfast at Farmer and the Cook, an organic market, café and farm on the west side of town. Take a table alone with a coffee and a plate from the kitchen, then pick up fruit for later from the market shelves.
The arcade and Libbey Park
Drive into downtown and walk Ojai Avenue under the arcade, the long white Mission-Revival colonnade that shades the shops and cafés on the north side of the street. Across the avenue is Libbey Park, with oaks, lawns, a playground, the Libbey Bowl amphitheater and the post office bell tower at its edge.
Walk the arcade end to end and back, ducking into galleries and shops along the way. On your own you can stop wherever something catches your eye; the whole downtown is about a ten-minute stroll from end to end.
Expert tip: walk the arcade in the late morning, when the low sun slants under the arches and the cafés are just filling. By early afternoon the sidewalks get busy with day-trippers.
A garden lunch and the valley museum
Where to eat: lunch at Hip Vegan Cafe, a small café with a quiet garden patio a block off Ojai Avenue. It is an easy place to eat alone with a book.
After lunch, visit the Ojai Valley Museum on Ojai Avenue, a small museum of the valley’s history, nature and the Chumash people who lived here first. Check opening hours on its site; it is a good hour on your own before the evening.
The first Pink Moment and an early dinner
As sunset nears, walk east along Ojai Avenue to an open spot with a clear view north to the Topatopa bluffs. On clear evenings the face of the mountains glows pink and then lavender for a few minutes just before the sun goes down. Find a bench, put the phone away and watch it change.
Where to eat: dinner at Boccali’s, a casual pizza and pasta place at the east end of town, close to where you watched the bluffs. Order early; a long first day ends best with an early night.
