The 60-second version

At a glance

Who it's for
Couples who like their romance with a little adrenaline — big-adventure days (jet boats, bungy, heli-hiking) balanced with slow ones (Wanaka's lakefront, Tekapo's hot pools, dark-sky stargazing), and a real bed in a different town every night. No camping required.
Route
Queenstown (2 nights) · Milford Sound (day trip) · Wanaka (1) · Franz Josef (1) · Aoraki/Mt Cook (1) · Lake Tekapo (1) · Christchurch (fly home)
Best timing
December–February (New Zealand summer): the warmest weather, sunset around 9:30pm for long adventure days, and all alpine tracks fully open. Book the Milford cruise and heli-hike early — both sell out in peak season.
Pace
Active — 1,400+ km of driving, one 6.5-hour drive day, hikes from lakeside strolls to the 3-hour Hooker Valley Track. Built for travelers who'd rather be moving than lounging.
Sleep
Five different beds in six nights — two in Queenstown, then Wanaka, Franz Josef, Tekapo, and Christchurch. Fly into Queenstown (ZQN), home from Christchurch (CHC).
Good to know
Drive on the LEFT. Expect a one-way rental fee (Queenstown to Christchurch). There's no fuel between Te Anau and Milford Sound — fill up in Te Anau. Freedom camping is heavily restricted; this route uses real accommodation.

Rough budget

$2,800 – $4,500 for two, excluding international flights

Lodging runs $1,100–$1,900 for six nights; food $560–$840; the big activities (Milford cruise, jet boat, bungy, gondola) $600–$1,100 for two; and the rental car plus fuel comes to roughly $450–$700 including the one-way fee. Add about $1,000 if you both take the Franz Josef heli-hike. All NZD prices converted at 1 NZD ≈ US$0.56 (October 7, 2026).

The day-by-day

Seven days, one way: Queenstown to Christchurch

This is a one-way road trip, not a loop — fly into Queenstown (ZQN), pick up a rental car, and hand the keys back in Christchurch (CHC) seven days later. Total driving is about 1,400 km, with the longest day (Franz Josef to Mt Cook) at roughly 6.5 hours. Tap a day to open it.

The idea

One island, seven days, and every kind of big.

The direct answer: the South Island is the rare place that lives up to the brochure, and a week is exactly enough to see why — Queenstown for the adrenaline, Milford Sound for the fjord, Wanaka for the exhale, Franz Josef for the ice, Aoraki/Mt Cook for the walk, and Tekapo for the stars. This route is a one-way drive — fly into Queenstown, home from Christchurch — so you never retrace a kilometer. Every price below is verified for 2026 and converted at 1 NZD ≈ US$0.56 (October 7, 2026).

The route works because it alternates the two things couples actually want on a trip like this: shared adrenaline and shared quiet. Day 2 is the adrenaline peak — jet boats, bungy, luge, hot pools — and Day 3 is the spectacle peak, the long road to Milford and the cruise beneath Mitre Peak. Then the trip deliberately downshifts: Day 4 is Wanaka's slow lakefront, Day 5 is the glacier at your own pace, and Day 6 pairs the trip's best walk (the Hooker Valley Track) with its darkest sky (Tekapo's reserve). Day 7 is just a pretty drive and a graceful exit.

Two ground rules make it work. Respect the drive times. South Island distances look short on a map and drive long in reality — narrow roads, one-lane bridges, and scenery that demands pullouts. The longest day (Franz Josef to Mt Cook, ~6.5 hours) is scheduled once, early in the week, with fuel stops planned. And book the icons early. The Milford cruise, the heli-hike, and the Onsen hot pools all sell out in summer — this itinerary puts the booking deadlines in the planning section so nothing slips.

What the money goes to

  • Lodging — $1,100–1,900: 6 nights at $180–320/night; the Rees Hotel in Queenstown and Peppers Bluewater in Tekapo are the splurges, motels elsewhere keep the average sane.
  • Food — $560–840: café breakfasts and bakery lunches $15–25/day each, bistro dinners $60–90 for two, one memorable night at Rata or Kika $120–160.
  • Activities — $600–1,100: Milford cruise ~$185 for two, Shotover Jet ~$220 for two, Kawarau bungy ~$360 for two, gondola + luge ~$100 for two, Onsen pools ~$100 for two, Tekapo Springs ~$36 for two.
  • Car & fuel — $450–700: a week of one-way rental ~$350–500 plus the one-way fee (~$85–170), and fuel for ~1,400 km at NZ prices (~$1.30–1.60/liter).

Pack for the trip

  • Broken-in hiking shoes — the Hooker Valley's 10.6 km and Roys Peak punish new boots; trainers with grip cover everything else.
  • Rain shell, always in the daypack — Milford and the West Coast can drop a month of rain in an afternoon; summer days start sunny and end soaked.
  • Layers, not bulk — merino base, fleece mid, shell outer. Alpine mornings are cold even in January; Milford can swing 20 degrees in a day.
  • Swimwear — Onsen, Tekapo Springs, the Franz Josef hot pools, and Wanaka's lake are all swimmable if you're packed for it.
  • Serious sun protection — the NZ sun is famously harsh (thin ozone, clear air); SPF 50, sunglasses, and a hat are non-negotiable.
  • Sandfly repellent — Milford's sandflies are legendarily persistent; DEET-based repellent and covered ankles at dusk.
  • Offline maps downloaded — coverage dies on SH94 and the Haast Pass; download the South Island before you leave Queenstown.
  • Reusable water bottle — NZ tap water is excellent and the refill points are everywhere; skip the plastic.
  • One nicer outfit — Rata in Queenstown and Kika in Wanaka reward the couple who didn't dress for the glacier.
  • Portable charger — long driving days plus photo-every-pullout habits drain phones by afternoon.

Eat & drink like a local

South Island food is honest and excellent. Breakfast: flat whites and cabinet food (the glass-case pastries) at any good café, ~NZ$15 (~$8). Lunch is the Fairlie Bakehouse pie run, Fergburger, or a winery platter in Gibbston. Dinner highlights: Rata in Queenstown (fine NZ dining, book ahead), Kika in Wanaka, Alice May in Franz Josef. Drink: Central Otago pinot noir is the region's claim to fame — Rippon and the Gibbston wineries pour it with a view. Coffee culture is serious; the long black is the default order.

Day trips & swaps

Got an eighth day? Add it in Queenstown — the Routeburn Track day walk, a wine tour in Gibbston, or the Cardrona drive. Rainy Milford day? The cruise still runs and the waterfalls are better — only the road closes, and then only in extreme weather (check the NZTA journey planner). Traveling in winter instead? This itinerary needs a rewrite: the Homer Tunnel has avalanche risk, the Hooker Valley ices over, and daylight shrinks to 9 hours — come back in summer.

Planning notes

Is New Zealand's South Island good for couples?

Yes — it's one of the great couples' road trips in the world. Big-adventure days (jet boats, bungy, heli-hikes) pair with slow ones (Wanaka's lakefront, Tekapo's hot pools, dark-sky stargazing), and every night ends in a real bed in a different town. It suits active couples who like their romance with a little adrenaline.

How much does 7 days in the South Island cost for two?

Roughly $2,800–$4,500 for two, excluding international flights: lodging $1,100–$1,900, food $560–$840, activities $600–$1,100, and the rental car plus fuel around $450–$700 including the one-way fee. Add about $1,000 for two if you both do the Franz Josef heli-hike. Converted at 1 NZD ≈ $0.56 (October 7, 2026).

When is the best time to visit the South Island?

December–February (New Zealand summer): the warmest weather, the longest days (sunset around 9:30pm in Queenstown), and all alpine tracks fully open. This itinerary is built for summer. Book the Milford cruise and the heli-hike early — both sell out in peak season.

Should we rent a car, a campervan, or take tours?

Rent a car. This route is a one-way drive (Queenstown to Christchurch) of 1,400+ km, and a car gives you the freedom the long days need. Expect a one-way drop fee and book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer. Freedom camping is heavily restricted — use holiday parks or book accommodation, as this itinerary does.

Is the drive to Milford Sound difficult?

It's long, not technical: about 4 hours each way from Queenstown on SH94 via Te Anau, including the 1.2 km Homer Tunnel. In summer it's straightforward — fill up in Te Anau (no fuel between Te Anau and Milford), watch for kea at the tunnel, and consider the coach if you'd rather watch the scenery than the road.

Do we need to book the Milford Sound cruise in advance?

Yes in summer — book at least a week or two ahead. The classic nature cruises run about NZ$165 (~$92) per person from Milford; coach-and-cruise day trips from Queenstown run NZ$285–$365 (~$160–204). Morning cruises have the calmest water; afternoon light is best for the waterfalls.

Is the Franz Josef heli-hike worth it?

For most couples who can afford it, yes — it's consistently rated the highlight of a South Island trip. Expect NZ$750–$999 (~$420–$560) per person for about 2 hours on the ice, all gear included. It's weather-dependent, so book it for early in your Franz Josef stay and keep the valley walks as backup.

What is the Hooker Valley Track like?

The South Island's best easy big-payoff walk: 10.6 km return, about 3 hours, mostly flat with three swing bridges, ending at iceberg-dotted Hooker Lake beneath Aoraki/Mt Cook (3,724 m). Start from the White Horse Hill car park; go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the midday crowds. It's free.

Can we see the stars at Lake Tekapo?

Tekapo sits inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve — among the darkest skies in the Southern Hemisphere. On a clear night the Milky Way is naked-eye obvious. Book a Dark Sky Project tour for telescopes and laser-guided storytelling, or just walk to the lakefront away from town lights.

Do we need travel insurance?

Yes — get a policy that explicitly covers adventure activities (jet boating, bungy, heli-hiking) and rental-car excess. Medical care for visitors isn't free, and weather cancellations are common enough that trip-interruption cover earns its keep.

Can we add Abel Tasman to this itinerary?

Not in 7 days without breaking the route — Abel Tasman is at the top of the island, a full day's drive from Christchurch. If sea kayaking the golden-sand coast is a priority, add 2–3 days and loop north from Christchurch, or save it for a second trip paired with the Marlborough Sounds.
