02Snow day · sleigh ride & tubing
Day two is the snow day — the one the kids will talk about for years. A horse-drawn sleigh ride in the morning, tubing at Ski Hill at midday, and snow play at Waterfront Park in the afternoon. Everything is within 25 minutes of downtown, so there's no marathon driving.
Morning: the sleigh ride
Mountain Springs Lodge (19115 Chiwawa Loop Rd, ~25 minutes from downtown) runs the classic daily group sleigh ride: a two-horse open sleigh through snowy meadows along Beaver Creek, 40–50 minutes, ending with hot spiced cider by an open fire. Departures at 11:30 AM, 1 PM, and 2:30 PM. Tickets are $26/adult and $16/child — book ahead, winter weekends sell out. The breakfast ride ($40) and steak-dinner ride ($79) are the upgrades if you want the full experience.
- What to wear: the sleigh is open — full winter gear, blankets provided but bring your own layers
- Book direct: call (509) 763-2713 or book at mtsprings.com; winter rides run late December through mid-February
- Kids: all ages welcome; the fire-and-cider finale is the bribe that works
Midday: Ski Hill tubing
Leavenworth Ski Hill (just 2 minutes from downtown) runs a dedicated tubing hill: $39 for all ages, 6 runs, tubes provided, in-person tickets only (no online sales — arrive early on weekends). No skill required — sit, slide, repeat. The hill also offers downhill skiing ($38/adult) and a sledding area ($17, $50 family). Plan 2 hours for tubing; the lodge has hot drinks and a warming area.
Tubing with kids: The hill is gentle enough for ages 4+. Hand warmers are non-negotiable — kids burn through warmth fast on the lift ride up. The in-person-only ticket policy means arrive by 10 AM on December weekends or risk selling out.
Afternoon: Waterfront Park
Walk off lunch at Waterfront Park — the riverside trail along the Wenatchee River, an easy 1-mile loop from downtown. In winter it's a snow-play paradise: sledding spots, snowman-building clearings, and the river running steel-grey between snowy banks. The bridge viewpoint gives the classic shot of the village rooftops with the Cascades behind. Free, always open, and the perfect low-key comedown after the tubing hill.
Warm-up
Icicle Brewing Company — the family-friendly taproom on Front Street. Parents get the Bootjack IPA or a seasonal winter ale; kids get hot cocoa or root beer. The long communal tables handle strollers and wiggly toddlers without judgment. It's the standard-issue Leavenworth warm-up stop, and it earns the reputation.
Dinner
King Ludwig's — the upscale Bavarian pick, cozy after a day in the snow. The jäger schnitzel and the beer-braised bratwurst plate are the moves. Dark wood, low light, accordion music on weekends. Reservations smart in December. Lighter option: München Haus — the famous outdoor bratwurst stand with picnic tables (yes, even in winter; the heaters work).
Where to stay
Same Leavenworth base — no repacking. Tonight, if you booked the Bavarian Lodge, the outdoor hot tub in falling snow is the reward for a full snow day. The Posthotel spa does a proper wind-down. Budget travelers: the Fairbridge indoor pool lets the kids burn off the last of the tubing energy.
Bad-weather plan
Blizzard? The sleigh ride may cancel (they'll rebook you). Pivot to the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm — the covered barn tour runs in most weather ($25/person, $5 under 3, book ahead). Or do the Nutcracker Museum if you skipped it yesterday, then an early dinner and the lights.
