Las Vegas with kids: sharks, red rock trails and a snow day on the mountain

Reviewed How we verify

Four winter days in Las Vegas at a kid’s pace, from one hotel on the middle of the Strip: a flower conservatory, an aquarium and the fountains on day one, easy trails at Red Rock Canyon on day two, sledding at Lee Canyon on Mount Charleston on day three, and the desert gardens and museums of downtown on the last day.

The idea

Four days in Las Vegas with kids: flowers under glass, sharks overhead, red rock underfoot and snow on the mountain.

Las Vegas sits in a wide desert valley ringed by mountains, with the Strip running down the middle. Most of what children love here is off the casino floor: a glass-roofed conservatory, an aquarium, fountains that dance to music, red sandstone canyons a short drive west and, in winter, real snow on Mount Charleston about an hour away.

Day 1 stays on foot on the Strip: the Bellagio Conservatory, Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, a chocolate stop and dinner facing the fountains. Day 2 is Red Rock Canyon’s Scenic Drive and easy trails, then the Pinball Hall of Fame. Day 3 drives up to Lee Canyon for sledding and snow play, with AREA15 on the way back. Day 4 is Springs Preserve, the Natural History Museum’s dinosaurs, the Downtown Container Park and the Discovery Children’s Museum.

Traveling as a couple instead? Las Vegas for couples is the grown-up week, with Valley of Fire and the neon museum. For more desert days with kids, see the Grand Canyon’s South Rim or Scottsdale and Phoenix. More city trips are in Cities & Urban.

The route

Four days, one base, short drives

The Strip on foot, a red rock morning, a snow day and the downtown museums, three nights in the same room.

Plan & pack

Pack for the trip

  • Sun hats and sunscreen. The desert sun is strong in winter too, on the Strip and at Red Rock.
  • A refillable water bottle each. The air is dry, and the canyon has water only at the visitor center.
  • Sturdy shoes with grip. For sandstone scrambling at Red Rock and the Springs Preserve trails.
  • Snow pants, boots and mittens. For the Lee Canyon day; rent them if you are flying in.
  • Warm layers for the evenings. Desert nights turn cold quickly after sunset.
  • A roll of quarters. For the Pinball Hall of Fame.
  • Lip balm and moisturizer. Dry air and cold wind chap lips and hands fast.
  • Snacks for the car. Day 2 and Day 3 have long stretches between meals.

Quick answers

Planning notes

Is Las Vegas good for kids?

Yes, if you plan around the casinos. The Bellagio Conservatory, Shark Reef Aquarium, the fountains, Red Rock Canyon, Lee Canyon’s snow, AREA15, Springs Preserve and the downtown museums are all built for families or welcome them.

How many days do you need in Las Vegas with kids?

Four days and three nights gives one day on the Strip, one at Red Rock Canyon, one in the snow on Mount Charleston and one downtown, with rest time each afternoon.

Can kids walk through casinos in Las Vegas?

Yes, with an adult, but children cannot stop at the gaming tables or machines. Use hotel walkways and keep moving.

Do you need a reservation for Red Rock Canyon?

Yes, from October 1 to May 31, between 8 am and 5 pm, cars entering the Scenic Drive need a timed-entry reservation from Recreation.gov, bookable up to 30 days ahead.

Is there snow near Las Vegas?

Yes. In winter, Lee Canyon on Mount Charleston, about an hour from the Strip, usually has snow for sledding, snow play and ski lessons. Check its site for conditions and opening dates.

Where should a family stay in Las Vegas?

In the middle of the Strip near the Bellagio and Paris, so the first day is on foot, or at a hotel without a casino floor. Rent a car for the Red Rock and Lee Canyon days.

When is the best time to visit Las Vegas with kids?

November to March is mild for walking and hiking in the valley, and it is the season for snow at Lee Canyon. Summer days are very hot for outdoor plans.

Is the Pinball Hall of Fame free?

Entry is free. Most machines take quarters, so bring coins or use the change machines.
