02Phoenix · museums + Papago Park
Day two crosses into Phoenix — 20 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale — for the city's best family stops. The Heard Museum anchors the morning, Papago Park fills the golden afternoon, and Roosevelt Row closes the day with murals and dinner.
Morning · Heard Museum
The Heard Museum (2301 N Central Ave) is the country's premier museum of Native American art and culture. Admission is about $26 for adults, $10 for kids 6–17 (under 6 free). The kachina doll collection alone is worth the trip — hundreds of intricately carved figures — and the outdoor sculpture garden gives kids space to move between galleries.
Plan 2 hours. The museum's family discovery drawers (hands-on drawers kids can open throughout the galleries) are the secret weapon for ages 5–10. The Berlin Gallery tells the Phoenix-area story through the Hohokam people who built 500+ miles of irrigation canals here a thousand years ago — kids who've seen desert canals all trip will connect the dots.
Parking is free in the museum lot. The Courtyard Café does solid Southwestern lunch if you want to eat before heading out.
Afternoon · Papago Park
Drive 15 minutes east to Papago Park — 1,500 acres of red-rock buttes in the middle of the city. The star is Hole-in-the-Rock: a natural sandstone formation with a short, steep 0.3-mile trail to a chamber with window-like openings framing the city. Kids scramble up in 15 minutes; the view is disproportionate to the effort.
After the climb, walk the 0.5-mile paved loop around the Papago Ponds — ducks, turtles, and shaded benches. Restrooms and water are at the Hole-in-the-Rock parking lot. Go after 3pm — the red rocks glow in late light and the parking lot empties as the morning crowds leave.
Evening · Roosevelt Row
Drive 10 minutes to Roosevelt Row, Phoenix's arts district. The streets are an open-air gallery — massive murals cover entire building walls. Park and walk Roosevelt Street between 7th Ave and 7th Street; give each kid a phone camera and make it a mural scavenger hunt.
Dinner options on the Row:
- Cibo — wood-fired pizza in a converted 1913 bungalow; the patio is the move
- Welcome Diner — retro-chic comfort food, great with kids
- Novel Ice Cream — literary-themed flavors for dessert (the "Atticus Finch" is peanut butter + honey)
Bad weather plan
Rain is rare in winter Phoenix, but if it comes: swap Papago Park for the Arizona Science Center (600 E Washington St) — planetarium, hands-on exhibits, and a multi-story climber that burns kid energy indoors. Or extend the Heard Museum and add the Phoenix Art Museum (next door to the Heard).
Where to stay
Same base: Old Town Scottsdale. No need to move hotels — Phoenix is a day trip:
- Hotel Valley Ho — back to the pool after a full Phoenix day
- Hyatt Regency Scottsdale — big resort pool, waterslide, kids' club for the evening
- Airbnb in South Scottsdale — more space for the same money, full kitchen for breakfast
Heard Museum (2 hrs, book nothing — walk in) → Papago Park Hole-in-the-Rock (after 3pm) → Roosevelt Row murals + dinner
Desert driving: Phoenix freeways are wide and fast — allow 25 minutes between stops, not the 15 the map promises. The Heard Museum and Papago Park are the two anchors; Roosevelt Row is flexible — skip it if everyone's tired and eat in Old Town instead.
