The route, lived day by day.
This is the journey behind the slides: a firsthand account built only from what the team saw, did and brought home. Each image opens a chapter; the writing between them carries the route forward.

Lived, not listed
A firsthand route across Costa Rica
Someone on the Earth Adventure Travel team took this trip. The perspective, photographs and field notes that follow come from that journey.
Over 13 days, the route linked rainforest, river and reef. The experience moved from a small-group arrival into active days of hiking, paddling, rafting and riding, then returned from the Caribbean coast to the capital on Day 13.

What We Signed Up For
Slide 02 · Trip overview
The shape of the trip
Movement was built into the route
The group numbered about 12, with an age guide of 12 and older and a moderate-fitness pace.
Hiking, paddling, rafting and riding kept the days active. Comfortable hotels carried most of the journey, with one rustic jungle lodge changing the rhythm for a night beside the river.
The route
Five stops, one loop.
From the capital, the route arcs through cloud forest, volcano country and the Pacuare before reaching the Caribbean coast—and closes the loop on Day 13.

Touchdown in the Capital
Slide 04 · Day 1 · Arrival
Day 1 · Arrival
Bags down, crew together
The first impressions were immediate: warm green air, local craft and warm smiles.
Roughly 12 new crewmates gathered for the first time. A welcome dinner and first toast turned an arrival day into the beginning of the shared journey.
Chapter II · The cloud forest

Into the Cloud Forest
Slide 05 · Days 2–3 · Monteverde
Days 2–3 · Monteverde
Climbing into the mist
The road wound past coffee hills toward Monteverde, where the cloud forest brought us level with the treetops.
We crossed hanging bridges above the canopy and ziplined over green valleys. Coffee at a family farm completed a stretch of the trip shaped by height, mist and the landscape below.

The Night Walk

Verified highlight
The forest changed after dark
With headlamps on, we followed a guide into the night forest and listened to its chorus.
The walk itself was easy. What made it unforgettable were the details revealed along the way: a red-eyed tree frog, a curled-up tarantula and a sleeping toucan.

Horseback Through the Hills

Monteverde · On the trail
Ridgelines at an easy pace
Gentle horses carried us along farm trails on the ridgeline at a pace suited to beginners.
As the mist lifted, green valleys came into view below. The ride paired an approachable pace with the largest views of this part of the route.
Chapter III · Volcano country

Arenal Rising
Slide 08 · Day 4 · La Fortuna
Day 4 · La Fortuna
A volcano on the horizon
A glassy lake crossing brought Arenal’s cone into view ahead of us.
La Fortuna became our adventure base for four days. The active days had a slower counterpoint in relaxed evenings and volcano views from the hot springs.

Mud, Dust & ATVs

A different angle on Arenal
We took ATVs onto the muddy back roads outside La Fortuna.
Every bend opened another angle on the volcano. The moderate ride ended exactly as the slide remembers it: splattered and grinning.

We Chose Our Thrills

Day 6 · Free adventure day
One day, more than one way to use it
Wild ginger marked the rainforest trails while the group chose its own pace.
Some took paddleboards onto a calm lagoon at sunrise. Others followed a trail to a thundering jungle waterfall. The day stayed open without losing the active character of the trip.

Eyes on the Wild
Slide 11 · Day 7 · Wildlife encounters
Day 7 · Wildlife encounters
The reward for looking slowly
A quiet wetland boat tour shifted our attention from the route ahead to the wildlife around us.
Caimans, herons, sloths and howler monkeys appeared along the way. Afterward, a turquoise waterfall pool gave us a place to cool off.
Featured highlight · The Pacuare River

We Rode the Pacuare
Slide 12 · Days 8–9 · Pacuare River
Verified highlight
Two days carried by the river
For two full days, expert guides led us through the Pacuare River.
We paddled hard through rapids between deep canyon walls. The calmer stretches opened toward waterfalls, with toucans overhead, giving the river time to change its character between the faster sections.

Sleeping to the Sound of the River

Day 8 · Pacuare riverbank
The one rustic night
The trip’s rustic jungle lodge sat beside the river, close enough for its sound to carry through the night.
A guided rainforest hike moved through medicinal plants and hidden trails. By morning, howler monkeys were calling through the mist.
Chapter IV · The Caribbean coast

Slowing Down, Reggae Style
Slide 14 · Days 10–12 · Caribbean coast
Days 10–12 · Caribbean coast
The pace changed at the water
Beach cruisers took us along palm-lined coastal roads as the route settled into its final stretch.
We caught a first wave during a beginner surf lesson, snorkeled the reef and walked through a fragrant botanical garden. The activities remained varied even as the overall pace slowed.

Until the Next Adventure
Slide 15 · Day 13 · Capital return & departure
Day 13 · The capital
Closing the loop
After a tropical breakfast and one more barefoot walk before leaving the coast, the route returned to the capital on Day 13.
We headed home sun-kissed and carrying stories from the loop. The team’s clearest closing note was simple: add extra coast days if you can.
Field notes · What the team learned

The Wildlife Never Stopped
Slide 16 · Field note 01
Field note 01
Bring binoculars
Capuchins appeared at eye level. Sloths, basilisks and egrets rewarded the moments when we slowed down.
The night walks added tree frogs and a coiled fer-de-lance to the trip’s wildlife encounters. The team note is direct: bring binoculars, because you will use them every day.

We’d Do It All Again
Slide 17 · Trip recap
The verified verdict
Thirteen days. Six featured highlights. One unforgettable trip.
From the Monteverde night walk and horseback ride to Arenal, the Pacuare and the Caribbean coast, the route kept changing without losing its active thread.
We would do it all again.
