Base: one flat or hotel in the Gothic Quarter or El Born for three nights, so the markets and dinner are on foot. The Gothic Quarter, Plaça Reial and El Born are free to walk. Pace: an arrival day: one market, one church, one long dinner. Hot chocolate, grill smoke, a first round of tapas.
From El Prat into the old town
Flights land at Barcelona–El Prat (BCN). Metro line L9 Sud runs from both terminals, and the airport bus goes to Plaça de Catalunya; check routes, fares and ticket types on the ATM site before you fly. From Plaça de Catalunya the old town is on foot.
Drop the bags. Agree on one rule now: phones and wallets go in a zipped front pocket or a cross-body bag, every day of the trip. Pickpocketing is very common in Barcelona, especially at the airport, on the metro and on La Rambla.
A suís at Granja Viader
Where to eat: Granja Viader, a granja on Carrer d’en Xuclà in El Raval, a step off La Rambla, open since 1870. Order a suís, thick hot chocolate under whipped cream, and something from the pastry case.
Granges are Barcelona’s old dairy cafés, for breakfast and afternoon snacks. Cocoa, cream, warm pastry. Nobody is in a hurry here, and neither should you be.
Lunch at the La Boqueria counters
La Boqueria is the market off La Rambla, under a high iron roof. The front stalls sell fruit cups to visitors; walk deeper in for the fish, the hams and the stand-up bars, where you take a stool at the counter and order what is on the grill in front of you.
Where to eat: any busy counter bar inside the market. Order grilled prawns, razor clams or chickpeas with spinach and share them down the line. Expert tip: go before the lunch rush, and check the market site for opening days and hours before you go.
Santa Maria del Mar and Plaça Reial
Cross Via Laietana into El Born for the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, a Catalan Gothic church with tall, slim columns and a huge open nave. It is a working church; keep voices low and check the visiting hours on its site.
Then loop back through the Gothic Quarter to Plaça Reial, an arcaded square with palm trees and lampposts designed by a young Gaudí. On the way, stop at Bubó, a pastry and chocolate shop on Carrer Caputxes beside Santa Maria del Mar, for a small cake.
Dinner at Bar del Pla
Where to eat: Bar del Pla on Carrer de Montcada in El Born, a market-cooking bar open all day for vermouth, tapas and dinner. Order a round of croquetes, the dish of the day and a bottle to share.
Ask the waiter what came in from the market that day. Then walk home through the lanes. It is a short walk, which is the whole point of sleeping in El Born.
