01JAX · Torras Causeway · Lighthouse · Pier Village
Day 1 is a travel day with a payoff. Land at Jacksonville International (JAX) — about 70 miles south of St. Simons — and drive north on I-95 to Georgia exit 29, then east across the F.J. Torras Causeway: four miles of golden marsh, egrets in the creeks, the island's oaks ahead. Budget 75 minutes wheels-down to check-in.
Afternoon: drop bags, then the lighthouse
Check in near Pier Village, then walk to the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum: $12 adults, $6 kids 6–12, open Mon–Sat 10–5, Sun 12–5. The 1872 keeper's dwelling holds the museum — period rooms, maritime exhibits, a 15-minute film. The 104-foot working tower is the main event: 129 cast-iron steps to a lantern gallery with a 360° view over the sound and the shrimp fleet. Go 90 minutes before sunset for gold light over the marsh.
Evening: Pier Village and the pier
Walk ten minutes to Pier Village, then out onto the St. Simons fishing pier. Winter sunsets here are the trip's first great free show — the sky turns the color of the shrimp boats' rust-red hulls, and the trawlers head out past the pier.
Dinner: Georgia shrimp, night one
Eat within sight of the boats: Georgia Sea Grill (Pier Village, shrimp and grits) or Crabdaddy's Seafood Grill (Mallery Street, the low-country boil). Shrimp season generally runs mid-June through mid-January — ask for Georgia wild-caught.
Where to stay
All three nights on St. Simons, in or near Pier Village. The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort (oceanfront since 1935, from ~$280/night), St. Simons Inn by the Lighthouse (from ~$180), or Queens Court Inn (from ~$169, a 1920s courtyard inn). Stay put — Jekyll and Brunswick are day trips.
Bad-weather plan
Rain? The museum is indoors — only the tower climb needs clear skies. Swap the pier sunset for a porch dinner at Halyards.
