Napa from San Francisco: downtown Napa, Yountville and Calistoga, for two

Reviewed How we verify

Three days in the Napa Valley for a couple, from a walkable base in downtown Napa: the Oxbow Public Market and the river, a slow day of bakeries and bistros in Yountville, and a last day up the valley in Calistoga with a geyser and an old water-powered mill. Wine tasting is there if you want it, with a plan for who drives.

The idea

Three days in Napa for two: a river town, a village of bakeries and a geyser at the top of the valley.

The Napa Valley runs about 30 miles north from the town of Napa to Calistoga, between two ranges of hills, with vineyards on the valley floor and small towns strung along Highway 29. It is famous for wine, but a weekend here works just as well around food, walks and the towns themselves, with tasting as an option.

Day 1 is downtown Napa: breakfast and lunch at the Oxbow Public Market, a walk along the Napa River and dinner downtown. Day 2 is Yountville, a small village of bakeries, bistros and outdoor art on Washington Street. Day 3 goes up the valley to Calistoga for its geyser and the Bale Grist Mill, then back down for a last dinner on the Napa riverfront and the drive home.

Want more of California? San Francisco and Big Sur runs south down Highway 1, and the Napa Valley babymoon is a slower six-day version of the valley. More trips built around food are in Food & Drink.

The route

Downtown Napa, then Yountville, then Calistoga and back, two nights in the same room.

Quick answers

Planning notes

Is Napa good for a couples weekend?

Yes. The towns are small and walkable, the restaurants suit a dinner for two, and the drives between them are short. Wine tasting is optional.

How many days do you need in Napa?

Two nights and three days covers downtown Napa, Yountville and Calistoga without rushing.

Where should you stay in Napa?

Downtown Napa is a good base: walkable to the river, the Oxbow Public Market and the restaurants, and central for drives up the valley.

Can you visit Napa without wine tasting?

Yes. The food, the towns, the river walk, the geyser and the Bale Grist Mill make a full weekend on their own.

Do you need a designated driver in Napa?

If you taste wine, yes. One of you should drive and not drink, or book a car. Tasting is for adults 21 and over.

How far is Napa from San Francisco?

About an hour and a quarter by car, depending on traffic.

What is the best time of year for Napa?

Any season works. The vines turn gold in October and November, and yellow mustard blooms between the rows from January to March.

Do you need restaurant reservations in Napa?

For weekend dinners and for the Bouchons in Yountville, yes. Book a few days ahead.
