The idea
Why Mackinac Island works for two
Mackinac Island sits in Lake Huron between Michigan's two peninsulas. Motor vehicles have been banned here since July 6, 1898, so the sounds are hooves, bike bells and ferry horns.
This plan gives you one day for the harbor and Fort Mackinac, one day for the 8.2-mile shore road and Arch Rock, and one slow morning on the Grand Hotel porch before the boat back.

01Arrive and slow down
Arrive by water and leave the car on the mainland.
Take the ferry across the Straits
Ferries leave from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. Arnold's fast ferry is $37 for an adult round trip from either side; Shepler's basic round trip is $39 plus a $2 booking fee per ticket. Bikes cost extra ($19 on Arnold, $21 on Shepler's). These are 2026 rates; check the 2027 fares before you go.
Walk Main Street and the harbor
Drop your bags, then walk Main Street. With no cars, the street belongs to bikes, carriages and people on foot. Pick up a slab of fudge to share; the island holds a Fudge Festival each fall.
Fort Mackinac on the bluff
Climb to Fort Mackinac above the harbor. In 2027 the fort opens April 30; adult admission is $18 and ages 5 to 12 are $10.75. The ticket also covers the Historic Downtown Mackinac sites.
Ride the earliest ferry you can so you have the afternoon on the island.
The ferry docks sit right on Main Street; the fort is a short uphill walk.
Where to stay
Stay downtown near the harbor if you want to walk to dinner both nights.
Bad-weather plan
If it rains, spend longer inside the fort buildings and the downtown historic sites.

Good to know: Summer hours at the fort run June 5 to Sept 5, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., last admission at 6 (2027 season).

02Around the island on two wheels
Plan a full day outdoors with long stops.
Ride the shore road
M-185 circles the island for 8.2 miles and is the only state highway in the country with no motor vehicles. Without stops, the loop takes about an hour by bike. Rent bikes downtown or bring your own on the ferry.
Arch Rock
On the east shore, Arch Rock stands 146 feet above the water. From M-185 it is 207 steps up to the viewing area, so lock the bikes and take the stairs together.
British Landing
On the north side of the island, British Landing is a natural halfway stop with a view across to the Mackinac Bridge. Bring water and a picnic.
Ride counterclockwise from downtown so Arch Rock comes early, before the midday traffic of bikes.
The loop starts and ends on Main Street; British Landing is about halfway.
Where to stay
A second night on the island means no ferry today.
Bad-weather plan
On a windy or wet day, ride part of the loop and come back the way you came.

Good to know: Walk your bike downtown when the streets are busy.

03A slow last morning
End the trip with a slow morning before the ferry.
The Grand Hotel porch
The Grand Hotel's Front Porch runs about 660 feet along the West Bluff. Non-guests pay an admission fee to visit the grounds and the porch; buy it on the hotel's site or at the east-end desk. The pool is not part of admission.
A last walk downtown
Walk back down to the harbor, pick up fudge for the trip home and catch an afternoon ferry.
Keep your last ferry time loose and give the porch a full hour.
The hotel sits on the West Bluff, a short uphill walk from downtown.
Where to stay
Check out first and leave bags at your hotel desk.
Bad-weather plan
On a cold morning, the hotel's parlor makes a good place to wait for the boat.

Good to know: Grand Hotel admission hours in September and October are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
