Start in Canal Park, Duluth's walkable waterfront, where the Aerial Lift Bridge links the mainland to Park Point, a long sandbar. Ships still move through the canal, so the bridge lifts on a working schedule.
Aerial Lift Bridge and the ship canal
The bridge was built in 1901-05 as a ferry bridge and converted to a lift bridge in 1929. Its span rises 135 feet to let freighters through. It is port equipment, so there are no rides, but the canal piers give a close view when a ship comes in.
Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center
Free, beside the canal at 600 Canal Park Drive. Exhibits cover Great Lakes shipping and the Duluth-Superior harbor. Hours change with the season, so check the visitor center page before you go.
The Lakewalk
More than seven miles of path along the shore, open year-round. Walk as far as you like and turn back; it's an easy way to settle in after the drive.
Enger Tower at the end of the day
A five-story stone tower from 1939 on the bluff above town, with a wide view of the harbor and lake. The tower is open from May 1 until the snow arrives; the park around it is free.
Arrive in Duluth by I-35. Enger Tower is a short drive up the hill from Canal Park.
Where to stay
Stay in or near Canal Park or downtown so the evening walk on the Lakewalk is right outside.
Bad-weather plan
The Maritime Visitor Center is indoors and free. Glensheen, a historic lakeside estate on London Road, is another indoor option.
Watch a ship pass under the lift bridge · Free maritime exhibits on the canal · An evening on the Lakewalk
Good to know: Lake Superior keeps the shore cool even in summer. Bring a warm layer for the piers.
