Drive 45 minutes south from Joshua Tree to Palm Springs via CA-62 W and I-10. Today is the atomic-age day — Palm Springs has the world's largest concentration of mid-century modern architecture: butterfly roofs, breeze blocks, walls of glass, and Alexander homes. Start with a self-guided architecture tour — pick up a map at the Palm Springs Visitors Center (the former Tramway Gas Station, itself a 1965 Albert Frey icon). The Twin Palms neighborhood (Frank Sinatra's Twin Palms estate is here) and the Movie Colony are the essential loops.
Morning: architecture tour
Allow 2 hours driving slowly (or biking — Bike Palm Springs rents cruisers). Look for: breeze-block walls (decorative concrete screens), butterfly roofs (V-shaped, like the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway), clerestory windows, and post-and-beam construction. The Palm Springs Art Museum's Architecture + Design Center (free, in a 1961 bank building) gives context. Best light: morning for east-facing facades.
- Maps: free at the Visitors Center — the "Mid-Century Modern" driving map
- Respect: these are private homes — admire from the street, don't trespass
- Modernism Week: if visiting in February, book tours months ahead
Afternoon: Aerial Tramway
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway — $36.95/adult — climbs 5,800 feet in 10 minutes in the world's largest rotating tramcars (the floor slowly revolves for 360° views). At the 8,516-foot summit, it's 30–40°F cooler — bring a jacket even in October. Walk the Desert View Trail (1.5-mile loop, easy, spectacular Coachella Valley views) or just have lunch at Peaks Restaurant. The Ride 'n' Dine combo (after 4 p.m., $45) pairs the tram with dinner.
Evening: VillageFest
If it's Thursday: VillageFest — a free street fair that closes Palm Canyon Drive from 6–10 p.m. (October–May; summer hours 7–10 p.m.). Local artists, food vendors, live music. It's the most Palm Springs thing you can do for free. Other nights: stroll El Paseo in Palm Desert (the "Rodeo Drive of the desert") or catch live music at a resort pool bar.
Where to stay
Move to Palm Springs for night 3 — a mid-century motel is the experience. The Parker Palm Springs (Jonathan Adler design, from $350/night) is the splurge. Ace Hotel & Swim Club (from $200/night, pool scene, Stargaze room) is the classic. Budget: Orbit In or Del Marcos Hotel (authentic 1947 motels, from $140/night). Dinner: Workshop Kitchen + Bar (James Beard-nominated, dramatic concrete interior) or Las Casuelas Terraza (Mexican, since 1958, mariachi weekends).
Bad-weather plan
Heat wave (110°F+ in summer, rare in Oct/Apr)? The Tramway is the escape — it's 40°F cooler at the top. Or tour the Palm Springs Air Museum (WWII aircraft, air-conditioned hangars, $24/adult).
