01Fly in, settle in.
Day 1 is a travel day with a view. Fly into Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) — the only commercial airport inside a US national park, with the Tetons rising right off the runway. It's 20 minutes to Jackson town. The town sits at 6,237 feet; the move on day one is to land, settle, and walk — not ski. Hydrate from the plane onward.
Afternoon: Town Square
Jackson's Town Square is anchored by the four elk antler arches — thousands of antlers shed on the National Elk Refuge. Walk the wooden boardwalks, duck into the Jackson Hole Historical Society Museum ($10), and watch the Stagecoach circle the square in summer (in winter, it's all about the lights).
Evening: the Cowboy Bar
The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar has been pouring since 1937 — saddle bar stools, live western music, and the best people-watching in Wyoming. Dinner: Snake River Grill (the special-occasion standard, reserve ahead) or Local (farm-to-table, walk-in friendly). Early night — the Tram starts at 9 a.m.
Where to stay
One Jackson base for all five nights. The Hotel Jackson (from ~$450/night, best in town), The Wort Hotel (from ~$350, historic 1941), or Mountain Modern (from ~$300, design-forward).
Bad-weather plan
If JAC closes, reroute through Idaho Falls (2 hrs). In town, the National Museum of Wildlife Art ($18, 2 miles north) covers a stormy afternoon.
JAC → town: 20 min · Town 6,237 ft · Sleigh rides: book ahead, $43/adult
Altitude rule: Jackson sits at 6,237 feet — lower than most ski towns, but the Tram tops at 10,450. Hydrate day one; the mountain hits harder.
