01ASE airport · Aspen town · the J-Bar
Day 1 is a travel day with a view. Fly into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) — ten minutes from downtown, and one of the most dramatic commercial approaches in the US. The backup is Eagle County (EGE), about an hour downvalley. Aspen sits at 7,908 feet; the move on day one is to land, settle, and walk — not ski. Hydrate from the plane onward: altitude hits hardest in the first 24 hours.
Morning: land and settle
Morning flights land best — ASE is notorious for winter weather holds, so build buffer into connections. Rent skis in town: Four Mountain Sports has locations at all four mountains; reserve demos online a week ahead for a discount. Check in, confirm tomorrow’s lift tickets are loaded, and walk the block to get your legs under you.
Afternoon: walk the town
Downtown Aspen is brick-paved and walkable end to end. Walk the pedestrian malls off Cooper Avenue, cut through Wagner Park, and find the Hotel Jerome (1889) — the grande dame with the famous J-Bar. Forgot something? Gorsuch sits two blocks away.
Evening: the J-Bar and dinner
The J-Bar pours the Aspen Crud — a bourbon milkshake that’s been the town’s signature since Hunter S. Thompson held court here. Dinner: Element 47 at The Little Nell (reserve weeks ahead) or White House Tavern for the famous burger. Early night — Ajax starts at 9 a.m.
Where to stay
One Aspen base for all five nights — no repacking, free shuttles everywhere. The Limelight Hotel Aspen (from ~$450/night, best value in the core), MOLLIE Aspen (from ~$380, design-forward), or the Hotel Jerome itself (from ~$800+, the splurge).
Bad-weather plan
If ASE closes, reroute through EGE — add two hours. In town, the Aspen Art Museum (free) covers a stormy afternoon.
ASE → town: 10 min · EGE → town: ~1 hr · Altitude 7,908 ft · Lift tickets: book 30 days out, up to 25% off
Altitude rule: A liter of water for every drink at the J-Bar. Day one at 7,908 feet punishes the dehydrated.
