The idea

A fall trip with enough stakes to feel memorable.

We designed this route for families whose teens want more than a scenic drive. The anchor is a guided Lower New River rafting day: real teamwork, loud water, and the bridge overhead. Around it, three days pair short, high-payoff hikes with room for slow mornings and weather changes.

Base near Fayetteville so the bridge, Long Point, and Endless Wall remain close. Grandview adds a second angle on the gorge; Babcock State Park changes the texture on the final day with Glade Creek and its working-replica grist mill. The route uses fall daylight carefully rather than stacking attractions.

If Bridge Day is the reason for the trip, build around Saturday, October 17, 2026, and expect a much busier region. If quiet trails matter more, choose another mid-October weekend. Either way, make outfitter reservations early and leave one flexible block for the weather or whatever catches the family’s attention.

The route

Four days from bridge rim to whitewater.

Use the route as a framework, not a stopwatch. Fall weather, river levels, event traffic, and limited trailhead parking all reward an early start and a flexible second choice.

01Bridge & Long Point

Meet the bridge from the rim—then earn the classic view.

Start at Canyon Rim Visitor Center for the bridge overlook and the scale of the gorge. Keep this first stop unhurried; it gives the whole family a map in their heads before the trail and river days begin.

Later, hike Long Point Trail to the west-facing rock outcrop. The National Park Service lists the trail at 1.6 miles one way, making the return roughly 3.2 miles. Plan to reach the point before sunset, then save enough light and energy for the walk back.

Long Point: 1.6 miles one way · Moderate · Unprotected cliff edges

Carry a headlamp: Sunset is the payoff, but darkness arrives quickly in October. Every person should have a reliable light for the return.
“The classic bridge shot, earned on foot.”

Put the family in one boat and give everyone a job.

Book a guided Lower New River trip for the itinerary’s biggest day. Many standard trips set a minimum age of 12, while some outfitters accept ages 10–11 only in an oar-controlled raft. Ask about the exact trip, water level, swimming expectations, and age rules before paying.

New River trips commonly run into September and October, weather and water permitting. Nearby Gauley Season brings controlled-release weekends and extra energy to the area, but the Upper Gauley is generally a 16+ experience and demands more ability. It is not the default choice for this family plan.

Reserve ahead · Confirm minimum age for your exact trip · Pack dry clothes for afterward

Cold-water question: Ask the outfitter whether wetsuits are included or rented and what they recommend for the forecast. Wear secure water shoes, not flip-flops.
“Big rapids under the bridge. Nothing tops it.”

03Endless Wall & Grandview

Take the cliff-line path, then change perspective.

From Fern Creek, hike to Diamond Point and return the same way for a popular route of about two miles. The full Endless Wall Trail is longer, but the overlook makes a natural turnaround. Stay well back from unprotected edges and never use the roadside as overflow parking.

After lunch, drive to Grandview. The Rim Trail runs 1.6 miles one way between Main Overlook and Turkey Spur, with several small steep hills near the far end. Decide at the overlook whether to walk a shorter segment, complete the 3.2-mile round trip, or arrange a vehicle shuttle.

Diamond Point: about 2 miles out and back · Grandview Rim: 1.6 miles one way

Go early: Fern Creek parking is small and often fills. If it is full, use the Nuttall trailhead alternative rather than parking along the road.
Illustrated day-four plan for Babcock State Park and Glade Creek Grist Mill
04Babcock State Park

Trade sandstone cliffs for a mill beside the creek.

Finish at Babcock State Park, about 20 miles southeast of the New River Gorge Bridge. The Glade Creek Grist Mill is a fully functional replica assembled from parts of earlier West Virginia mills, and the creek setting gives the trip a quieter final image.

The park offers more than 20 miles of hiking across 17-plus trails, so choose by weather and remaining energy rather than chasing a mileage total. After Labor Day, the mill is open weekends only through the last Sunday in October; weekdays can still work for exterior photos and a creekside walk.

Grist Mill: seasonal operation · Park trails: 20+ total miles · Confirm hours before driving

Timing matters: If seeing the mill operate is essential, schedule this day on a fall weekend. For a quieter photograph, a weekday is the better bet.

Quick answers

Planning notes

When does New River Gorge fall color peak?

Mid-October is the planning target, but foliage does not follow a fixed date. Elevation, temperature, rain, and wind all change the timing. Check the latest regional fall-color report shortly before leaving.

When is Bridge Day in 2026?

Bridge Day is Saturday, October 17, 2026. The official event runs on the bridge and brings major crowds and traffic changes. Confirm parking, shuttles, road closures, and event hours on the official Bridge Day site.

How old must teens be for rafting?

Many Lower New River trips use age 12 as the minimum. Some outfitters accept ages 10–11 in oar-controlled boats. Upper Gauley trips are generally 16+ and more demanding. Confirm the exact trip’s current age, swimming, fitness, and equipment requirements with the outfitter.

Does New River Gorge charge an entrance fee?

No. The National Park Service does not charge an entrance fee for New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Guided rafting, lodging, and other commercial activities have separate charges.

When is the Babcock grist mill open in fall?

West Virginia State Parks says the Glade Creek Grist Mill operates weekends only after Labor Day through the last Sunday in October. Seasonal hours can change, so confirm with the park before making the drive.

What should we pack for an October trip?

Bring quick-dry layers, fleece, a warm hat, secure water shoes, grippy hiking shoes, headlamps, a dry bag, and a camera with a secure strap. Ask the rafting outfitter whether a wetsuit is needed or provided.
