01DEN Airport · A Line · Union Station · LoDo
Day 1 is a soft landing at exactly one mile up. Fly into DEN, ride the A Line train straight to Union Station (about 35 minutes, no transfers), and check into your LoDo hotel — one base for all six nights. Denver's altitude is the real arrival story: drink water constantly for the first 48 hours, go easy on the alcohol tonight, and let your body catch up.
Evening: the Great Hall
Denver Union Station is the most beautiful room in the city — the 1914 Great Hall with its 65-foot windows, now lined with restaurants and bars. Dinner at Mercantile or Stoic & Genuine (oysters, in Denver, and they're good), then a LoDo stroll — Denver's oldest neighborhood, all brick warehouses turned breweries. The 16th Street Mall shuttle is free and runs the length of downtown if your legs are done.
Nightcap
End on a Larimer Square patio — the block that saved itself from demolition in the 1960s, now the prettiest street in Denver. Green Russell does a proper speakeasy cocktail if you want the last word to be literal. One drink, early night: tomorrow is the art day and you'll want fresh eyes. If the A Line made you hungry instead, the Tattered Cover bookstore inside Union Station is one of America's great indie bookshops — dangerous in the best way.
Where to stay
One LoDo base, six nights. The Crawford (inside Union Station itself, from ~$350), the Kimpton Born (from ~$280, great bar), or The Ramble in RiNo (from ~$220, creative-class cool). Book 2–3 months out for summer.
Bad-weather plan
Rain on arrival day is a gift: the Union Station bookshop and bars, the Denver Central Library, and an early dinner reservation absorb it completely.
DEN → Union Station: A Line ~35 min · Altitude: 5,280 ft — hydrate · 16th Street shuttle: free
Altitude rule: The first-day headache is real and preventable — a liter of water before dinner, one alcoholic drink max, and you'll wake up fine.
