Four days · Copenhagen at Christmas

Copenhagen at Christmas for two: Nyhavn, Tivoli and long candlelit evenings

Reviewed How we verify

Three nights in the old centre, Wednesday to Saturday: Nyhavn as the lamps come on, Rosenborg’s crown jewels and a smørrebrød lunch, the spiral ramp of Rundetaarn, a train up the coast to Louisiana, Tivoli lit for Christmas and the gold spire over Christianshavn.

The idea

Four days, one old city, a lot of candlelight, two of you.

Copenhagen in December is dark by mid-afternoon, and the city answers with light: candles in every window, lamps along the canals and Tivoli strung with thousands of bulbs. It is compact, flat and easy on foot, and almost everything in this trip is within a short walk of the old centre.

The days run Wednesday to Saturday, which keeps the castle and the museum off their closed Mondays and the canal restaurant off its Sundays. You will walk Nyhavn at dusk, see the crown jewels at Rosenborg, eat smørrebrød where it has been served for generations, climb the spiral ramp of Rundetaarn, ride the train up the coast to Louisiana, and spend an evening in Tivoli before a last climb in Christianshavn.

Pack for cold and wet, book the two restaurants that fill early, and leave room in the afternoons for a coffee and a pastry somewhere warm.

Plan & pack

Pack for the trip

  • Layers. Museums and restaurants are warm inside.
  • A card for payments. Denmark is close to cash-free.
  • Reservations on your phone. Bæst, Schønnemann, Kanalen and Grøften.
  • Something smart for dinner. Kanalen and Grøften lean dressy.
  • A small daypack. For the train to Louisiana.
