Base: a hotel or inn on or near the Downtown Mall, two nights. DC to Charlottesville is about 2 hours 30 minutes by car via US-29, more on a Friday afternoon. Amtrak also runs from Union Station to Charlottesville, but a car is what opens up the vineyards and Monticello’s mountain. Walking the car-free Downtown Mall is free, day or night. Pace: an easy first day for two: the drive is the longest stretch, the break is the long lunch at Early Mountain, and the evening is a slow walk on the Mall.
South on US-29
Where to eat: breakfast in DC before the drive; there is little worth stopping for on the road until lunch.
Leave DC after the morning rush and the city thins out fast: Warrenton, the horse country, then the Blue Ridge sitting low and blue on the right for the last hour. US-29 is a plain road through lovely land, and it delivers you to the vines around lunchtime without a single toll. Fill the tank before you go; the wineries are reached on country roads.
A long lunch at Early Mountain
Where to eat: Early Mountain Vineyards, for lunch with a tasting flight.
Early Mountain Vineyards sits off US-29 near Madison, about half an hour short of town, which makes it the natural first stop. Take a table on the terrace or by the fire, order the food first and a flight second, and let the drive go out of your shoulders. The view is pasture and wooded ridges rather than anything dramatic, and that is the appeal. Expert tip: Reserve weekend tastings ahead. The wineries on this trail fill on Friday and Saturday afternoons in the fall, and a booking also tells you who is driving.
A glass on the lawn at King Family
Where to eat: King Family Vineyards, for a glass on the lawn.
From town it is about 20 minutes west to Crozet, where King Family Vineyards sets its lawn against the Blue Ridge. Share a glass rather than a full flight if you had one at lunch, and sit out until the light goes gold on the mountains. On weekends there is often polo on the field in season; ask at the bar rather than plan on it.
Tapas in Belmont, then the Mall
Where to eat: Mas Tapas, in Belmont, for small plates and a bottle to share.
Drop the car at the hotel and take a short ride across the tracks to Belmont, the small, walkable neighbourhood just south of downtown. Mas Tapas is low-lit and loud in a friendly way, built around small plates meant for sharing. Afterwards, walk the Downtown Mall: eight blocks of brick with no cars, café tables under the willow oaks, music drifting from doorways.

Bad-weather plan
Rain on the drive? The wineries move people indoors, and Early Mountain’s tasting room has a fire. Skip the lawn at King Family and go straight to an early dinner, then walk the Mall under an umbrella; the shop awnings cover much of it.
Stay: Downtown Charlottesville · Anchor: Early Mountain Vineyards · reserve weekend tastings
Good to know: No driving after tastings. Split the tasting with a shared flight, pick a driver for the day, or book a car between vineyards.
