Day-by-day summary

The idea

The squares do the heavy lifting.

Savannah tempts visitors into two mistakes: treating it as a half-day stopover, or trying to "do" it like a theme park with a checklist. This plan does neither. Three days gives the city room to work its real magic — slow mornings under live oaks, long lunches that turn into afternoons, and evenings when the gas lamps flicker on and the whole Historic District glows.

The route bases in the Historic District for both nights (no repacking), then works outward: Day 1 covers the squares, Forsyth Park, and River Street on foot. Day 2 goes beyond downtown — Bonaventure Cemetery in morning light, then Tybee Island for beach and lighthouse. Day 3 is for food and culture: City Market, a historic home tour, and a farewell dinner worth remembering.

This is built for couples who want romance without fuss, and families who want walkability without boredom. Everything is flat, everything is close, and the city's best attraction — the squares themselves — is free. The one hard rule: wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk 15,000 steps a day and never notice.

The route

Three days in the Hostess City.

Use each day's anchor as the plan, not a quota. Start early for Bonaventure's morning light, guard the midday hours for Tybee, and let dinner reservations set the evening pace.

“The Parkway isn’t a road you drive. It’s a ridgeline you borrow for three days.”

What earns space

  • Layers for 30-degree elevation swings — 2,000 ft to 6,000 ft in a day
  • Rain jacket — mountain weather shifts fast, fog is common
  • Hiking shoes for overlook trails (not just the car)
  • Cooler with picnic supplies — no restaurants on the Parkway
  • Camera + binoculars for hawk watching at overlooks
  • Full gas tank — no stations on the Parkway
  • Offline maps downloaded — cell service is patchy
  • Blanket for sunset overlook picnics
Blue Ridge Parkway at Love Gap, Virginia
Layers. Love Gap at 2,500 ft vs. Richland Balsam at 6,053 ft — 30 degrees apart on the same day.
Blue Ridge Parkway in fog
Rain jacket. Mountain fog rolls in fast. The Parkway is beautiful in mist — if you’re prepared.
Blue Ridge Parkway in morning fog
Morning fog on the Parkway is why layers are non-negotiable — 2,500 ft at Love Gap vs. 6,053 ft at Richland Balsam means 30-degree swings on the same day. The mist burns off by 10 a.m.

Quick answers

Planning notes

Is the Blue Ridge Parkway good for couples?

It's one of the most romantic drives in America. Sunset overlooks, cozy mountain towns, winery stops, and the Grove Park Inn's spa make it ideal for couples. The slow 45-mph pace forces you to actually talk to each other.

When is the best time to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Mid-October for peak fall color — the higher elevations turn first, then the valleys. Late April brings wildflowers and fewer crowds. Summer is lush but hazy. Winter sections close for ice; check nps.gov/blri before going.

How long does it take to drive the whole Parkway?

The full 469 miles takes 3–5 days if you actually stop. Most people do sections. This 3-day itinerary covers Miles 0–384 (the best of Virginia and North Carolina) at a relaxed couples pace with time for hikes and towns.

Is there an entrance fee for the Blue Ridge Parkway?

No — the Parkway itself is free, no entrance fee or pass required. Grandfather Mountain (private) charges $25–$40 per person. Biltmore Estate starts at $90. Most overlooks, trails, and the Folk Art Center are free.

Where should couples stay on the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Blowing Rock for nights 1–2 (walkable, romantic, great restaurants). Asheville for night 3 (breweries, Biltmore, Grove Park Inn spa). The Green Park Inn and Chetola Resort are couples favorites in Blowing Rock.

Can you drive the Parkway in one day?

Technically yes, but you'd miss everything. The 45-mph speed limit means 469 miles takes 10+ hours of pure driving. The Parkway is designed for slow travel — overlooks, hikes, and mountain towns are the point.

What should we pack for a Blue Ridge Parkway road trip?

Layers (30-degree swings between elevations), rain jacket, hiking shoes, cooler with picnic supplies, full gas tank, offline maps, and a blanket for sunset overlooks. No gas stations or restaurants on the Parkway itself.

Is the Linn Cove Viaduct worth stopping for?

Absolutely — it's the Parkway's signature engineering feat and most photographed spot. Park at the Linn Cove Visitor Center (MP 304), walk the short trail underneath via the Tanawha Trail, and allow 30 minutes. Go early to avoid crowds.

What's the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Richland Balsam at Milepost 431 reaches 6,053 feet — the highest point on the Parkway road itself. Mount Mitchell (6,684 ft, via detour at MP 355.4) is the highest peak east of the Mississippi.

Are there good restaurants on the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Not on the Parkway itself — pack picnics. But the towns deliver: Blowing Rock (The Gamekeeper, Bistro Roca), Boone (Stick Boy Bread, Lost Province), and Asheville (Cúra, The Admiral, 30+ breweries) are all excellent.
