Day-by-day summary

The idea

Biscayne is a national park you visit by boat — and winter is when the water is calmest.

Here’s the direct answer: four winter days do Biscayne with kids. Day 1 lands at MIA, drives ~45 minutes to Homestead, and meets the park at the Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Convoy Point (open daily 9–5, no entrance fee). Day 2 is the reason for the trip: the Biscayne National Park Institute’s Snorkel Experience — 3.5 hours, from about $115/person, gear included, reef/mangrove/shipwreck sites picked by the captain. Day 3 takes the Heritage of Biscayne Cruise (3.5 hours, ~$83, all ages) across the bay to Boca Chita Key and its ornamental 1938 lighthouse. Day 4 drives 30 minutes to the Everglades for the Anhinga Trail boardwalk — alligators at arm’s length. Base in Homestead for all three nights. Total boat-tour spend for a family of four runs about $700–$850.

The park is 95% water — the reefs, the keys, the mangrove shoreline all sit beyond the boat dock, and Convoy Point is the only place you can reach by car. That’s why the two non-negotiables are booking the tours before you fly and visiting in the dry season (December–April): calmer water, mid-70s °F days, fewer bugs, and the bay at its clearest. Winter water sits in the mid-70s °F — cool enough that kids’ rash guards earn their keep, warm enough that nobody needs a wetsuit for a morning snorkel.

This is built for a family that wants a national park trip with training wheels on the logistics and none on the wonder. Every day names the operator, the departure point, and the backup plan, because the one thing you can’t control — wind — is the one thing that cancels boats. The two hard rules: reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen only, applied 30 minutes before boarding, and never touch the coral — it’s alive, it’s protected, and it breaks.

The route

Four days on the water’s edge.

Use each day’s anchor as the plan, not a quota. Book the two boat tours before you fly — the snorkel tour sells out on winter weekends. Mornings are for the water (calmest before the afternoon breeze); late afternoons are for Convoy Point sunsets.

“Biscayne doesn’t ask you to climb higher. It asks you to look down — into the water.”

What earns space

  • Reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen — zinc or titanium only; apply 30 min before boarding; chemical sunscreens harm the reef
  • Rash guards for everyone — the winter sun burns and mid-70s °F water is cool for small kids
  • Quick-dry water shoes — Boca Chita’s beach is rocky in spots; the boardwalks are splinter-free but hot
  • Small dry bag — boat spray, surprise splashes, and the swim stop; phones live in this
  • Binoculars — wading birds on the reef flats, manatees at Convoy Point, warblers in the Everglades
  • Full change of clothes per person — you will be damp after every boat day; the car ride home matters
  • Mosquito repellent — the Everglades breeds them even in winter; the Anhinga lot is the worst spot
  • Light layers for evenings — January cold fronts can drop Homestead into the 50s °F after sunset

Eat like you’re in Homestead

Homestead eats in farm stands and local institutions. The non-negotiables: Robert Is Here (19200 SW 344th St — key-lime milkshakes, exotic fruit, petting zoo), Knaus Berry Farm (seasonal Nov–Apr — the cinnamon rolls sell out by 10 a.m. on winter weekends), White Lion Cafe (132 N Krome Ave — the local dinner pick), Taqueria Morelia (Krome Ave tacos), and Capri Restaurant (Florida City — old-school Italian). The splurge-adjacent move: Schnebly Redland’s Winery (tropical-fruit wines in a coral-rock courtyard).

Day-trip add-ons

Have a fifth day? John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo (~45 min south) runs glass-bottom and snorkel boats over the same reef system — a worthy second reef day. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (Miami, ~1 hr north) is the grand-estate counterpoint. Flamingo (38 miles into the Everglades) adds a backcountry boat tour and the park’s best sunset. Each is a full day; don’t stack one onto a boat day.

Quick answers

Planning notes

What is the best age for kids on this Biscayne trip?

Ages 6 and up get the most from it — old enough to snorkel with a vest, young enough to be amazed. The island cruise welcomes all ages, and the Anhinga Trail boardwalk is stroller-friendly. Under 6s do fine on the cruise and the visitor center, but they’ll sit out the standard reef snorkel.

Can kids under 8 snorkel at Biscayne?

The standard Snorkel Experience is generally listed for ages 8 and up. Younger kids can snorkel on a private trip or the beginner-oriented tour with a 1:1 adult ratio — the operator’s age rules change by season, so confirm when you book. The Heritage cruise has no minimum age.

When is the best time to visit Biscayne with kids?

December through April — the dry season. Days run in the mid-70s °F, the water is calmest, mosquitoes are at their fewest, and winter cold fronts keep the humidity down. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, rough water, and peak bugs; hurricane season runs June through November.

Is there an entrance fee at Biscayne National Park?

No — Biscayne charges no entrance fee, and Convoy Point parking is free. The costs are the boat tours: the snorkel tour runs from about $115 per person and the island cruise about $83. The Everglades day trip does charge $35 per vehicle (good for 7 days).

Do we need a rental car for this trip?

Yes — there’s no public transit to Convoy Point or the Everglades entrance. Fly into MIA, rent at the airport, and take the Florida Turnpike to Homestead (~45 minutes). A free Homestead National Parks Trolley runs from downtown Homestead to the park on winter weekends if you’d rather not drive one day.

What happens if our boat tour is canceled for weather?

Wind is the usual culprit — the operator calls it by morning, so check your email before driving out. The desk will rebook you to another day; that’s why the snorkel tour sits on Day 2 with slack after it. The island cruise runs in conditions that cancel reef trips, so it’s the natural backup.

Is the ocean too cold for kids to snorkel in winter?

Winter water sits in the mid-70s °F — cool but comfortable for a 3.5-hour trip with a rash guard, and kids acclimate fast once they’re looking at fish. Air temperatures in the mid-70s help. If your kids run cold, ask the operator about wetsuit availability when you book.

Can you swim at Boca Chita Key?

Yes — there’s a small beach cove on Boca Chita where the Heritage cruise stops, and it’s the trip’s best swim. There are no lifeguards and no facilities beyond restrooms, so bring what you need. Elliott Key’s beaches are nicer but only reachable by private boat.

Where should a family stay for Biscayne National Park?

Homestead — the hotels where Campbell Drive meets the Turnpike are 15–20 minutes from Convoy Point and half the price of Miami. Hampton Inn & Suites Homestead and Courtyard Miami Homestead are the family picks; Fairfield Inn & Suites Homestead runs cheapest. Stay put all three nights.

Should we add a Miami day to this trip?

If you have a fifth day, yes — Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an hour north and pairs beautifully with the bay you’ve been boating on. Otherwise Miami is a drive-by: the four days here are already full. Don’t sacrifice the Everglades day for Miami.
