Beacon and Cold Spring from NYC, car-free: a museum, a mountain and the Hudson Highlands

Reviewed How we verify

Two nights in Beacon and three days for a group of friends: the Hudson Line up from Grand Central, Main Street and the falls, a morning on Mount Beacon and an afternoon at Dia, then a Sunday in Cold Spring with a riverside hike before the train home.

The idea

A train up the river, a museum in a box factory and a hike above the Hudson.

Beacon and Cold Spring sit on the Hudson about an hour and a half north of Grand Central, both on Metro-North’s Hudson Line, which makes them one of the easiest car-free weekends from New York City. Beacon has a long Main Street of galleries and restaurants, a waterfall at one end and Dia Beacon, a big contemporary art museum in a former Nabisco box-printing plant, by the river. Cold Spring is smaller and older, with an antiques-and-cafés Main Street that runs down to a riverside gazebo.

The route keeps one base in Beacon for both nights. Day 1 is the train and Main Street on foot. Day 2 is a steep morning on Mount Beacon and an afternoon at Dia. Day 3 takes the train ten minutes south to Cold Spring for a river walk or a harder climb up Bull Hill, then home.

Which trip is for you: if it is two of you in winter and you would rather ride a bus into the mountains, see the Catskills weekend in this Weekend Escapes series. With young kids and a car in fall, the five-day Catskills and Hudson Valley fall trip with kids fits better. More like this sits under Historic & Cultural and Mountain Towns.

The route

Three days, one Beacon base, two river towns

The train up on Friday, a mountain and a museum on Saturday, and Cold Spring on Sunday, both nights in the same room.

Plan & pack

Pack for a train weekend on the Hudson

  • One small bag each. On Sunday you carry it on the train, through town and up a trail.
  • Real walking shoes. Mount Beacon’s staircase and Bull Hill’s rocks are steep.
  • Traction in winter. Slip-on spikes for icy steps from December to March.
  • A warm layer. Overlooks above the river are windier and colder than town.
  • Water and snacks. Nothing is sold on the trails.
  • The MTA TrainTime app. For tickets and the train times home.
  • A small daypack. Large bags stay at Dia’s coat check.
  • A phone charger. Tickets, maps and dinner reservations all live on it.

Quick answers

Planning notes

Can you do Beacon and Cold Spring without a car?

Yes. Both are stations on Metro-North’s Hudson Line from Grand Central, about 1 hour 30 to 35 minutes to Beacon and about 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes to Cold Spring. In Beacon the free Loop bus links the station, Dia, Main Street and the Mount Beacon trailhead.

Is Beacon or Cold Spring better for a weekend?

Do both. Beacon has more restaurants, Dia Beacon and Mount Beacon, so it makes the better base; Cold Spring is 10 minutes south by train and is best for a Sunday walk and lunch.

What days is Dia Beacon open?

Friday to Monday from 10 a.m., closing at 4 or 5 p.m. depending on the season. It is closed Tuesday to Thursday. Adult admission is about $25.

How long is the Mount Beacon hike?

About 2.4 miles round trip to the casino ruins overlook, or about 4.4 miles to the fire tower, starting with a long, steep staircase. Allow two to three hours.

What hikes can you do from Cold Spring station?

Little Stony Point, an easy 0.9-mile loop, and Bull Hill from the Washburn trailhead, a steep short loop of about 4.55 miles. Both are about a mile on foot from the station on Route 9D.

How do you get to Magazzino from Cold Spring?

Magazzino runs a ticketed shuttle from the Cold Spring station lot on its open days, Friday to Monday. Reserve it with your visit on Magazzino’s website.

Is Beacon worth visiting in winter?

Yes. Dia Beacon and Main Street’s galleries and restaurants are indoors, the town is quieter, and Mount Beacon is a good winter climb with traction on the steps.
