The 2026 Family Guide to a 5-Day Fall Adventure Through the Catskills & Hudson Valley

Glowing pumpkins, apple picking, a sky-high river walk, one giant waterfall, and a chairlift over the leaves—without asking little legs to do too much.

The idea

Peak fall, paced for little legs.

Fall in this corner of New York does not need to mean a long hike or a packed sightseeing list. We designed five days around one memorable anchor at a time: an evening trail of glowing pumpkins, a broad bridge above the Hudson, a farm day, a near-instant waterfall view, and a chairlift over the Catskills.

The route gradually moves north from Croton-on-Hudson through Poughkeepsie and Modena before settling near Tannersville or Hunter. Most transfers are roughly 25 minutes to an hour, and every walk stays under 1.5 miles. That leaves room for naps, cider doughnuts, leaf piles, and the small discoveries that rarely fit a timetable.

The one structural rule is Day 5: Hunter Mountain’s fall SkyRide operates on Saturdays and Sundays. Build the calendar backward from that weekend day, then reserve the Blaze for an early evening entry.

The route

Five days of fall magic.

Follow the days in order, but let weather decide the details. The route gets more mountainous as it goes, ending where the Catskills turn orange and gold.

Begin after dark at the Blaze.

Keep the first day gentle, then head to Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson for The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. The 2026 event runs from September 18 through November 8, with entry times varying by date and every night in October included in the calendar.

This is seasonal art rather than a haunted house: thousands of carved pumpkins become tunnels, animals, and glowing scenes. Timed tickets start at $24 and are sold in advance online only. Choose an early slot for younger children, layer up, and bring a small headlamp for the walk back to the car.

Croton-on-Hudson · Van Cortlandt Manor · Timed entry · September 18–November 8, 2026

Book first: Prime October times can sell out. Buy the Blaze before locking the rest of the route.
“Thousands of glowing jack-o’-lanterns, up close — an after-dark adventure that feels cozy, not scary.”

02River in the sky

Cross the Hudson at stroller speed.

Walkway Over the Hudson stretches 1.28 miles between Poughkeepsie and Highland, 212 feet above the river. Admission is free during regular hours, and the park is normally open from 7 a.m. to sunset, weather permitting.

The broad, paved, car-free deck is unusually easy with a stroller or scooter. There is no need to complete the full out-and-back: turn around whenever the views have done their work. Go midmorning for calmer family energy, then continue toward Modena.

Poughkeepsie · Free · 7 a.m.–sunset · Flat, paved, stroller- and scooter-friendly

Little-leg version: Walk only to the first satisfying river panorama. The bridge is the attraction, not a mileage challenge.
Day three itinerary artwork for apple and pumpkin picking at Hurds Family Farm
03Apples & pumpkins

Let the farm become the whole day.

Hurds Family Farm in Modena layers apple and pumpkin picking with play areas, hayrides, a giant slide, a bounce pillow, farm animals, and a corn maze. Planned fall hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m. through October 25; verify your exact date before driving.

For ages three and older, online weekend wristbands are listed at $25 for VIP or $34 for Ultimate. Apple-picking bags start at $15 and include one free Express wristband. Farm pricing is detailed enough to affect the family budget, so purchase only the activity level your group will actually use.

Modena · 9 a.m.–5 p.m. through October 25 · Wristbands required for ages 3+

Mud strategy: Wear boots, keep spare socks in the car, and bring bags that can handle apples, pumpkins, and damp layers.

04Waterfall & lake

Take the short route to a giant view.

From the Laurel House Road lot, the Kaaterskill Falls viewing platform is about 0.3 miles each way. DEC built the wide, smooth-surface route with resting areas and lists the platform approach as accessible. Stay on the platform route; trails below the falls are steep and can be slippery.

Then slow the afternoon down at North-South Lake. The planned 2026 day-use fee is $10 per vehicle through October 25, with picnic space and an easy shoreline atmosphere. The waterfall gives the drama; the lake gives everyone room to decompress.

Catskill Park · Platform route: 0.3 mile each way · North-South Lake day use: $10/vehicle

Safety choice: Take the photo from behind the barrier. Wet leaves, loose rock, and cliff edges make the lower routes a poor match for this itinerary.
“A huge waterfall view with barely any walking: 0.3 miles each way to one of New York’s tallest falls.”

05Leaves from above

Finish above a sea of color.

Hunter Mountain’s Scenic SkyRide runs Saturdays and Sundays only through October 18, roughly 10 a.m.–4 p.m., weather permitting. Make this the fixed weekend day in the itinerary. Posted planning prices are $31 per adult and $21 per child; recheck the booking calendar before purchase.

Colors in the Catskills adds free festival admission on October 3–4, 10–11, and 17–18, 2026. The lift itself is ticketed. Children must be at least three years old and 36 inches tall, and carriers are not allowed on the chairlift, so measure before promising the ride.

Hunter · Weekends only · Through October 18 · Approx. 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Weather rule: Lift operations can pause. Build in enough daylight for a relaxed change of plan if mountain wind or rain intervenes.
“Five days, short drives, walks under 1.5 miles — peak fall designed around little legs.”

Quick answers

Planning notes

When is the best time for this fall trip?

Early to mid-October gives the best overlap of scheduled attractions and likely Catskills color, but foliage changes with elevation and weather. The SkyRide’s 2026 fall season ends October 18, while the Blaze continues through November 8.

Why must Day 5 be on a weekend?

Hunter Mountain’s fall SkyRide operates Saturdays and Sundays only through October 18, 2026. Put Hunter on the relevant Saturday or Sunday, then count backward to place the other four days.

Can we buy Blaze tickets at the gate?

No. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze uses timed entry, and advance purchase is required; nothing is sold at the gate. Tickets start at $24, with prices varying by date and time.

Is the route stroller-friendly?

Walkway Over the Hudson is flat, wide, and paved. The Kaaterskill viewing-platform route uses a firm, smooth surface, though it has a grade and outdoor conditions vary. A compact stroller or carrier still helps at the farm and on rougher ground.

How much driving is involved?

Most day-to-day moves are roughly 25 minutes to an hour in normal conditions. The route works best as a northbound trip with lodging that changes along the way rather than repeated backtracking.

How reliable is the budget?

It is a directional range, not a quote. Lodging and transport create the widest variation, and activity pricing can change. Recheck every ticket, fee, and cancellation term before purchase.

Fees, schedules & trail conditions change. Verify with official sources before you go.
