03Uptown · Museum to Park
Start at the American Museum of Natural History (200 Central Park West). It's $37 adult / $22 child (3–12) / $30 senior-student, open 10am–5:30pm daily (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). Arrive at 10am opening to beat school groups. Kids love the dinosaur halls (4th floor), the blue whale (Milstein Hall), and the butterfly conservatory (seasonal, extra ticket). The Hayden Planetarium space show is worth the extra $10. Allow 3–4 hours — it's huge.
Morning: Natural History Museum
The museum has 45 permanent halls — you can't see it all. For families, prioritize: Dinosaurs (4th floor, T. rex and Apatosaurus), Ocean Life (1st floor, the 94-foot blue whale), Human Origins (3rd floor), and the Discovery Room (1st floor, hands-on for kids 5–12). The food court in the basement has kid-friendly options. Strollers are allowed but the museum is crowded — consider a carrier for toddlers. The Rose Center planetarium shows run every 30 minutes.
- AMNH — $37/$22, 10am–5:30pm, arrive at opening
- Central Park — FREE, enter at 81st St, walk to Gapstow Bridge
- FAO Schwarz — FREE to browse, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, giant piano
- Wollman Rink — Central Park skating, $15–$35, less crowded than Bryant Park
Afternoon: Central Park in winter
Walk across the street to Central Park (enter at 81st St). In December, the park is magical — Gapstow Bridge (near 62nd St) with snow is postcard-perfect. Walk south to the Wollman Rink (skating $15–$35, less crowded than Bryant Park). Or take a horse-drawn carriage ride ($50+ for 20 min, negotiable). Kids love the Central Park Zoo ($14 adult/$9 child, 10am–4:30pm) — the penguins and snow leopards are active in winter. The Balto statue (near 67th St) is a fun photo op. If there's snow, Pilgrim Hill (72nd St) is the best sledding spot.
Family tip: The Central Park Zoo is small (1 hour max) but perfect for young kids. Combine it with the Tisch Children's Zoo (petting zoo, free with admission). In winter, the 4D theater shows are a warm break. The zoo is at 64th St & 5th Ave, a 10-min walk from the museum via the park.
Late afternoon: FAO Schwarz
Take the subway to FAO Schwarz (30 Rockefeller Plaza, at 49th St). It's FREE to browse and kids can play with the toys. The giant dance-on piano (from the movie "Big") is the highlight — kids (and adults) can play it with their feet. The stuffed animal section is huge. Allow 1 hour. It's a great last stop before dinner — you're back in Midtown near your hotel. The store is open 10am–8pm (shorter hours on Sundays).
Where to stay
Stay in Midtown (same hotel). The Michelangelo (152 W 51st St) is 3 blocks from FAO Schwarz, from $450/night. Pod 51 Hotel (230 E 51st St) is budget-friendly, from $200/night. Farewell dinner: Carmine's (200 W 44th St) for celebratory family-style Italian, or The Smith (1900 Broadway) for American brasserie with a kids' menu. For a special treat: Serendipity 3 (225 E 60th St) for frozen hot chocolate — the wait can be 1+ hour, go at off-peak times.
Bad-weather plan
If it's bitterly cold, spend more time at AMNH (you can easily do 5 hours). The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 5th Ave, $30 adult/free under 12) is also nearby and has a great Arms and Armor hall that kids love. Or take the subway to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum (Pier 86, $36 adult/$24 child) — the aircraft carrier and Space Shuttle are indoors/outdoors mix.
Subway: C to 81st St (AMNH) → Walk through park to Zoo (1 mi) → F train to 47-50 Sts (FAO) · Total walking: ~2 miles · Museum $37/$22, Zoo $14/$9
Logistics tip: AMNH tickets can be bought online to skip the line. The butterfly conservatory requires a timed ticket (extra $10). For Central Park, download the Central Park Conservancy app for a GPS-enabled map — it's easy to get lost. Bathrooms are at the Loeb Boathouse (74th St) and the Dairy (65th St).
