The trip starts on ID-55, the Payette River Scenic Byway — about 100 miles and two hours north of Boise through the river canyon. Fill the tank in Boise; the road is beautiful and mostly two lanes. Check in, drop your bags, and head straight for the water: Legacy Park on E Lake St is McCall's front porch — a lawn sloping to Payette Lake, with the marina and the mountains across the water.
Time your first walk for golden hour. The paved path runs from Legacy Park west past the marina — about a mile of flat strolling with the lake glittering on your left. Downtown is three blocks of 3rd Street — outfitters, galleries, the famous bear statues, Ice Cream Alley. The sun drops behind the west ridges and the whole lake goes amber; in winter the same walk wears snow boots, and the light is even better.
Dinner is the trip's first decision. Rupert's at Hotel McCall (1101 N 3rd St) is where locals go for a special meal — New American cooking, lake views, reservations recommended, dinner Thursday–Monday (closed Tue–Wed). Or keep it easy: My Father's Place (901 N 3rd St) does the town's beloved burgers daily until 5 p.m., and Lardo's Grill & Saloon on W Lake St has the lake-view patio. Bad-weather pivot: arrive earlier — rain just moves golden hour to the gallery windows.
The plan
- ID-55 up from Boise (~2 hrs); check in by mid-afternoon.
- Legacy Park shoreline at golden hour; 3rd Street galleries and ice cream.
- Dinner in town — Rupert's (reserve ahead), My Father's Place, or Lardo's.
Where to stay
- Shore Lodge — the lakeside grand hotel; the splurge base.
- Hotel McCall — boutique downtown, Rupert's downstairs.
- Brundage Inn — simple, well-kept, easy on the budget.
Land by late afternoon. McCall's best free show is the sun dropping behind the west ridges — don't spend it in a parking lot.
