02Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail · Furman · Travelers Rest
Day 2 is the active day. The Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 28-mile network, and the 17.7-mile Green Line runs from Travelers Rest through downtown. It’s a flat, paved former rail bed — no hills, no traffic. The classic: downtown to Travelers Rest and back — 10 miles each way, about an hour per leg. Open dawn to dusk, free, 500,000+ users a year.
Morning: rent and roll
Rent comfort cruisers at Reedy Rides downtown near Falls Park (half or full day — check current rates). Prefer the easy version? Pedego Electric Bikes sits on the trail at Hampton Station, a couple miles north. Start by 9 a.m.: the trail crosses the Reedy below the falls, then threads north through neighborhoods you’d never otherwise see. Note the alphanumeric markers (like G314) every tenth of a mile — the trail’s address system.
Midday: Travelers Rest
Two miles north, stop at Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery (205 Cedar Lane Rd) — coffee and stecca-bread sandwiches, built by and for the trail. At mile 10: Travelers Rest — lunch at Swamp Rabbit Brewery & Taproom (26 S Main St, TR), then turn around. The prettiest stretch is through Furman University, where the trail skirts Swan Lake beneath the bell tower — slow down here. In late October, the maples here are the county’s best fall color.
Evening: back downtown
Bikes back by late afternoon, then dinner: Soby’s (207 S Main) — shrimp and grits, the Southern classic — or The Anchorage (586 Perry Ave), a 5-minute drive, for the four-course tasting menu.
Where to stay
Same downtown base — the Falls Park trailhead is a 5-minute walk from Main Street. The Westin Poinsett (120 S Main, from ~$207) is central; Grand Bohemian Lodge (44 E Camperdown Way, from ~$241) has falls-view balconies for the post-ride stretch; Hyatt Place Greenville Downtown (128 E Broad) is the easy value play.
Bad-weather plan
Storms kill a bike day — pivot to the Museum of Art (free), then a long lunch at Jones Oyster Co. (22 E Court St). The trail dries fast; a morning storm often means a perfect 3 p.m. ride.
Falls Park → Travelers Rest: 10 mi each way · flat, paved rail bed · ~1 hr by bike per leg · Trail open dawn to dusk, free · Rentals: Reedy Rides (downtown), Pedego e-bikes (Hampton Station)
Pro tip: Ride north in the morning and south after lunch — the return leg is slightly downhill and the light on Swan Lake is better going home.
