Day-by-day summary

The idea

The road is the destination.

The Florida Keys tempt families into two mistakes: blasting straight to Key West on day one, or treating the drive as dead time between stops. This plan does neither. Three days gives the 113-mile Overseas Highway room to work — one base per night, one signature experience per day, and the windows down for all 42 bridges.

The route moves south one key per day: Day 1 starts in Key Largo with a morning snorkel at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park — the only living coral reef in the continental US. Day 2 crosses to Islamorada (feed 100-pound tarpon at Robbie's) and Marathon (swim Bahia Honda's real sand beach, meet rescued turtles). Day 3 finishes in Key West — Duval Street, the Southernmost Point buoy, and sunset at Mallory Square.

This is built for families who want adventure without exhaustion. Drives are short (nothing over 90 minutes), the water is warm, and every stop has something kids can touch, feed, or swim in. The one hard rule: book the Pennekamp snorkel boat and the Turtle Hospital tour ahead — both sell out in season. And check the hurricane outlook before you go — June through November is storm season.

The route

Three days down the Overseas Highway.

Use each day's anchor as the plan, not a quota. Start early for the reef boats, guard the midday hours for the beach, and let the Key West sunset set the final evening's pace.

“The Keys measure distance in bridges, not miles — and every one of them is worth slowing down for.”

What earns space

  • Reef-safe sunscreen — required on the Pennekamp boats; regular sunscreen is banned to protect the coral
  • Snorkel gear (or rent it) — the park includes gear with the boat tour, but your own mask fits better
  • Rash guard — sun protection while snorkeling for hours without reapplying sunscreen
  • Water shoes — Bahia Honda has some rocky patches and the boat docks are slippery
  • Light rain jacket — spring showers pass fast, and the bridge can be windy
  • Dry bag — phones and wallets stay dry on the snorkel boat and kayaks
  • Reusable water bottles — it's hot, you're active, and refill stations are everywhere
  • Nice dinner outfit — Key West restaurants (Blue Heaven, Santiago's) reward looking sharp
Snorkel boats at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
Snorkel gear + rash guard. You'll be in the water 90 minutes at Pennekamp — your own mask and a rash guard beat rental gear and constant sunscreen.
White sand beach at Bahia Honda State Park
Water shoes. Bahia Honda's shoreline has rocky patches between the sand — water shoes handle the boat docks and the swim entry.
The Seven Mile Bridge carrying the Overseas Highway
Light layers + dry bag. The bridge run is windy even in May — layers for the drive, a dry bag for everything on the snorkel boat.
The Southernmost Point buoy in Key West
Dinner outfit. Key West's best tables (Blue Heaven, Santiago's Bodega) are worth dressing up for — pack one sharp outfit.
Seven Mile Bridge stretching across turquoise water
The Seven Mile Bridge is why you start early — cross before 10 a.m. and the whole Overseas Highway feels like yours. Reef-safe sunscreen is non-negotiable on the Pennekamp boats.

Quick answers

Planning notes

Is the Florida Keys good for kids?

Excellent — it's one of the easiest family road trips in America. Drives are short (nothing over 90 minutes), the water is warm and calm, and every stop has something kids can touch: feeding tarpon at Robbie's, snorkeling over coral at Pennekamp, swimming at Bahia Honda. Kids as young as 5 can snorkel the reef with a parent.

What is the best time to visit the Florida Keys?

March through May. The dry season brings calm seas, clear water for snorkeling, and highs in the low 80s — before hurricane season (June–November) and after the winter cold fronts. Spring break weeks are the busiest and priciest; late April and May are the sweet spot.

How many days do you need in the Florida Keys?

Three days covers the essentials: Key Largo (Pennekamp snorkeling), Islamorada and Marathon (Robbie's tarpon, Bahia Honda beach, Turtle Hospital), and Key West (Duval Street, Southernmost Point, sunset). Two days works if you skip Marathon. Add a fourth for a Dry Tortugas day trip from Key West.

Do kids need to know how to swim to snorkel at Pennekamp?

They need to be comfortable in the water, but the snorkel sites are shallow (8–15 feet) and the crew provides noodles and vests. Kids 5+ can go with a parent. Non-swimmers can ride the glass-bottom boat ($30 adult / $18 child) and see the same reef without getting wet.

What is Robbie's and is it worth it?

Robbie's of Islamorada (MM 77.5) is a marina where you hand-feed 100-pound tarpon from the dock — a $5 bucket of baitfish buys the most thrilling 20 minutes in the Keys. Go before 9:30 a.m. to beat the crowds. Dock entry is free; allow 90 minutes.

Which is the best beach in the Florida Keys?

Bahia Honda State Park (MM 37, $8 per vehicle). The Keys famously lack natural sand beaches, but Bahia Honda's Calusa Beach (calm, shallow, kid-perfect) and Sandspur Beach (classic palm-and-sand postcard) are the real thing. Arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends — the lots fill.

How much does a Florida Keys trip cost?

Budget roughly $1,800–$3,000 for two adults and two kids for three days, excluding flights. Lodging is the big variable: $140–$350/night depending on the key and season. The Pennekamp snorkel boat ($45 adult / $30 child) and Turtle Hospital ($35 / $15) are the main ticketed attractions — most beaches and docks are cheap or free.

Is the drive from Miami to Key West hard?

No — it's the point. The Overseas Highway (US-1) runs 113 miles over 42 bridges, and the whole Miami-to-Key West drive takes about 3.5 hours without stops. With kids, break it up: Key Largo on day 1, Marathon on day 2, Key West on day 3. Cross the Seven Mile Bridge before 10 a.m. to beat the RV traffic.

What should we pack for the Florida Keys with kids?

Reef-safe sunscreen (required on the Pennekamp boats — regular sunscreen is banned), rash guards for long snorkel sessions, water shoes for rocky beach entries, a dry bag for the boats, and one nice outfit for Key West dinners. The water is warm Mar–May; you won't need wetsuits.

Is Key West worth it with kids, or just for adults?

Absolutely worth it with kids — skip the late-night Duval scene and do the daytime version. The Southernmost Point buoy, Hemingway Home's six-toed cats, the Butterfly Conservatory's flamingos, and the Mallory Square sunset celebration are all kid gold. Fort Zachary Taylor beach is Key West's best swim spot.
