Why this weekend works

Big fall energy. Very little backtracking.

We designed this route for active families who want more than a leaf-peeping drive but do not want every day to feel like an endurance test. The train is easy, the bike ride earns the second day, and Hawk Mountain turns the last morning into a real wildlife watch.

Jim Thorpe is the anchor. Stay close enough to walk into town, allow extra parking time on peak weekends, and treat the published departure times as fixed points. Around them, leave room for lunch, a river overlook and whatever catches the family’s attention.

Day by day

One gorge, three ways.

Use the train and shuttle times as the weekend’s framework. Everything else can flex with weather, energy and fall traffic.

1Day one

Ride the Autumn Leaf train.

Start in Jim Thorpe with the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway’s 45-minute round trip. Coach seats are $25 per adult and $9 per child; open-air seats are $28 and $10. For kids who want the wind and color, open-air is the memorable choice—pack a warm layer.

  • 2026 season: September 26–November 15.
  • Free Fall Foliage Festival: October 3–4, 10–11 and 17–18.
  • Arrival: the railway recommends allowing at least an hour for peak-season parking and check-in.
Plan smart: Festival weekends add energy downtown and also bring the largest crowds. Reserve the train, then build the rest of the day around it.
“One gorge, three ways: an open-air train, a 15-mile rail-trail, and a ridge-line migration.”

Shuttle up. Ride 15 miles back.

The lower Lehigh Gorge ride uses the old rail corridor beside the river. Whitewater Rafting Adventures takes riders uphill, then families pedal the packed-gravel trail back toward Jim Thorpe without car traffic.

  • Corrected 2026 price: $66 per person with a rental bike; $39 with your own bike.
  • Weekend departures: noon and 1 p.m., May–October.
  • With younger riders: caboose trailers are available; helmets are included with rentals.
Reserve by phone and arrive 30 minutes before the shuttle. Ask the outfitter which setup best matches each child’s height and riding confidence.
“15 miles with waterfalls, river views and no cars — the shuttle-up format makes it a bike ride kids can actually do.”

3Day three

Count hawks at eye level.

Drive about 45 minutes to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton. The autumn migration count runs from August 15 through December 15, with counters and volunteers helping visitors identify raptors at North Lookout.

  • Lookout Trail: roughly 1 mile with about 300 feet of elevation.
  • Trail fee: $10 adult, $5 child ages 6–12; ages 5 and under are free.
  • Bring: binoculars, water, a warm layer and a small backpack.
Keep expectations open: migration depends on weather and wind. The shared activity is the point—scan the ridge, compare silhouettes and keep count together.

Before you go

Budget, layers and a little margin.

The estimate below is for a family of four using its own car. Lodging and food swing the total most; reserve those first.

What to pack

  • Riding layers that can handle changing temperatures
  • Rain shell and lightweight gloves
  • Reusable water bottles and trail snacks
  • Binoculars for Hawk Mountain
  • Small backpack and warm hat
  • Comfortable shoes with grip
  • Bike helmets if bringing your own bikes

Helmets are included with rental bikes.

Budget reality: the stated total includes a broad miscellaneous range because fall parking, fuel, lodging taxes and spontaneous meals vary. The attraction costs are the predictable part; bookable dates and current rates should still be confirmed.

Planning questions

Know before you reserve.

How does the 15-mile shuttle-up ride work?

You meet the outfitter, check in, load bikes and riders, then shuttle to the upper trail access. From there, the family rides the gentle rail-trail back down the gorge. Confirm the exact meeting point and return logistics when booking.

What is the corrected 2026 bike price?

The bike-and-shuttle package is $66 per person with a rental bike, or $39 per person when you bring your own bike. Reserve by phone and ask about caboose trailers for younger children.

Which weekend is best?

Late September through October is the core window. The Fall Foliage Festival runs October 3–4, 10–11 and 17–18, 2026. Those weekends offer more atmosphere but also more traffic; choose a non-festival weekend for a calmer town.

What needs to be booked ahead?

Prioritize the bike shuttle, weekend train seats and lodging. Fall weekends are busy, and the fixed shuttle departure times are the least flexible part of the plan.

Is $1,000–$1,700 realistic for a family of four?

It is a planning range, not a quote. It assumes two nights, your own car and the listed attraction costs. Lodging choice, food and miscellaneous travel costs determine where the weekend lands in the range.

How far is Hawk Mountain from Jim Thorpe?

Plan on roughly 45 minutes each way, then allow extra time for fall traffic. Check current road conditions before leaving and arrive early enough to hike and watch without racing dusk.
