Day-by-day summary

The idea

A steel town that kept its furnaces — and lit them for Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, 1741, Moravian settlers named their new town Bethlehem — and the name stuck so hard the whole city runs on it. Every December, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania becomes Christmas City USA: a German-style market glowing at the foot of the old Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces, candle-in-the-window traditions in a 1741 historic district, and a lit star on the mountain above it all.

This is the Christmas-market trip with an industrial soul. Where other towns give you the cute and the cozy, Bethlehem gives you something rarer: five lit blast furnaces towering over bratwurst stands, glass-blowers, and St. Nicholas. Four days — an evening at SteelStacks, a full market day, a Moravian old-town day, and a light-trail finale — covers it without rushing.

What earns space

  • Insulated boots with grip — the market is all outdoors; Main Street's cobbles get slick after dark
  • Parka + warm layers — in and out of market tents and shops; 30s–40s°F, colder at night
  • Knit hat, gloves & scarf — the open Trestle and the carriage ride have real wind
  • Sturdy tote bag — ornaments and market finds need a way home
  • Hand warmers — for the standing-room demos and the night tour
  • Camera + spare batteries — cold drains batteries on the Trestle
  • Car blanket — the drive-through lights finale is best from a warm seat
  • Cash — a few market stalls are cash-friendly

Pack for standing outside — the market, the Trestle, and the carriage ride are all open-air, so insulated boots, full layers, and hand warmers earn their space. A sturdy tote carries the ornaments home.

Quick answers

Planning notes

When is Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem in 2026?

The 2026 market runs November 13–15, 20–22, and 27–29, then December 3–6, 10–13, and 17–20. Hours are 10 AM–6 PM Thursdays and Sundays and 10 AM–8 PM Fridays and Saturdays. The market takes over PNC Plaza on the SteelStacks campus at 645 E. First St. in Bethlehem.

How much does Christkindlmarkt cost?

Admission is $14 all-in on Thursdays and Fridays and $16.50 on Saturdays and Sundays; children 5 and under are free. Fridays from 5–8 PM are free courtesy of ArtsQuest. Buy tickets online before a weekend visit — the Saturday lines build by noon.

Is Bethlehem good for kids at Christmas?

Yes — it's built for families. Kids meet St. Nicholas in his own Haus, watch live chainsaw ice carving and glass-blowing demos, ride the free Christmas trolley between the market and Main Street, and take horse-drawn carriage rides through the lit historic district. Market paths are flat and stroller-friendly.

How many days do you need in Bethlehem at Christmas?

Four days covers it without rushing: an evening at SteelStacks, a full Christkindlmarkt day, a Moravian historic-district day, and a light-trail finale. Two days works if you focus — one for the market, one for Main Street — but you'll skip the day-trip lights.

Where should a family stay in Bethlehem at Christmas?

Stay in Bethlehem all three nights. Hotel Bethlehem (historic, on Main Street, from ~$289/night) puts you in the old town; Wind Creek Bethlehem (from ~$145, a 13-minute walk to SteelStacks) suits the market days; the Courtyard off I-78 (from ~$120) is the budget play. Book December weekends early.

Where do you park for Christkindlmarkt?

Parking is free on the SteelStacks campus next to the market and at the Polk Street Garage (418 PA-412) — all first-come, first-served. Arrive before 11 AM on Saturdays. The free Christmas trolley runs between SteelStacks and the historic district, so park once and ride all day.

What is the Bethlehem Star?

The Bethlehem Star is the illuminated star on South Mountain — the city's glowing landmark, lit year-round since 1991, when officials decided to keep it on after the 250th anniversary. The Bethlehem by Night bus tour drives up to it, and it's visible from across the valley.

What is there to do in Bethlehem besides Christkindlmarkt?

The Moravian historic district: the Christmas City Stroll walking tour, horse-drawn carriage rides, the Bethlehem by Night bus tour, the UNESCO-listed 1741 Gemeinhaus and Waterworks, and the Main Street Weihnachtsmarkt huts. Day trips add Easton's Winter Village and Allentown's Lights in the Parkway.

How much does a Bethlehem Christmas family trip cost?

Roughly $1,500–$2,200 for a family of four for four days, excluding travel to the Lehigh Valley. December hotels run $120–$289+ per night. The market costs $14–$16.50 per adult (kids 5 and under free; Fridays 5–8 PM free). Food, a $99 carriage ride, and the $25-per-person night tour make up the rest.

Can you do Bethlehem as a day trip from New York or Philadelphia?

Yes — Bethlehem is about 90 minutes from New York City and 60 from Philadelphia, so Christkindlmarkt works as a long day trip. But the market runs Thursday–Sunday only, and the carriage rides, night tour, and light trails all happen after dark — two days lets you see the Christmas City lit up.
