03Blue Ridge Parkway · Craggy Gardens to Mount Mitchell
Save the best for last. The Blue Ridge Parkway (469 miles total) is America's most scenic drive, and the Asheville section is the crown jewel. Check nps.gov/blri before driving — Hurricane Helene repairs are ongoing and sections may close. The 26-mile stretch from Asheville (MP 382) to Mount Mitchell (MP 355.3) reopened Sept 2025.
Morning: Craggy Gardens
Enter the Parkway at MP 382 (near the Folk Art Center, 20 min from downtown). Drive to Craggy Gardens (MP 364, 30 min). The Craggy Pinnacle Trail (1.4 miles round-trip, moderate, 300 ft elevation) leads to 360° views. Rhododendron blooms in June, foliage peaks mid-October. Visitor center has restrooms and exhibits. Arrive by 9am — the lot fills by 11am on weekends.
- Trail: Rocky in sections — wear hiking shoes, not sneakers
- Weather: 15–20°F cooler than Asheville — bring layers
- Water: No water at trailhead — bring bottles
Afternoon: Mount Mitchell
Continue to Mount Mitchell State Park (MP 355.3, 20 min from Craggy). At 6,684 ft, it's the highest peak east of the Mississippi. The summit is a short paved walk from the parking lot. Mount Mitchell Restaurant (seasonal, check hours) does a solid lunch with views. Balsam Nature Trail (0.75 miles, easy loop) through the spruce-fir forest.
Where to stay & farewell dinner
Back in Asheville for the final night. Farewell dinner: The Admiral (enigmatic, creative — the locals' favorite) or Rhubarb (farm-to-table, James Beard-nominated chef). Curate if you missed it Day 1. For drinks: The Nightbell (rooftop) or Little Jumbo (craft cocktail bar).
Bad-weather plan
Parkway closed? Do the North Carolina Arboretum ($16 parking, 65 miles of trails, bonsai garden) or Chimney Rock State Park (1 hr southeast, 315-ft monolith, $17 adult). Sierra Nevada Brewery (Mills River, 20 min south) — massive taproom, free tours, live music.
Drive: Asheville → Craggy Gardens (30 min) → Mount Mitchell (20 min) · Parkway free, no admission · Check nps.gov/blri for closures · Bring layers + water
Friends tip: The Parkway is about the journey — stop at every overlook. Take turns driving so everyone gets the views. Pack a picnic from City Bakery — the overlooks beat any restaurant.
