03Ketchikan · Totem Bight · Creek Street
Ketchikan is Alaska's salmon capital and its rainiest port — it sits in the Tongass National Forest, the world's largest temperate rainforest, and it rains roughly two days out of three. Pack the rain shell, embrace it, and know this: Ketchikan is the easiest port day of the week. Everything is flat, everything is close, the two best sights cost almost nothing, and ships usually dock 7am–4pm.
Morning: Totem Bight State Historical Park
The best low-cost excursion in Southeast Alaska. Totem Bight (9883 N Tongass Hwy) holds 14 carved totem poles and a traditional clan house across 33 acres of rainforest — entry is $5 May through September, the city bus is $2 to the trailhead, and the trails are wheelchair-accessible. Give it 90 minutes: the poles tell clan stories, the clan house interior is open in summer, and the cove at the trail's end is prime bald-eagle spotting. Grandparents' perfect morning: culture, benches, no hills.
Afternoon: Creek Street & the Lumberjack Show
Back downtown, Creek Street is the boardwalk built on pilings over Ketchikan Creek — in July and August the salmon ladder runs thick with spawning salmon, free to watch, flat to walk. Then the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show (420 Spruce Mill Way): one hour, covered and heated grandstand, world-champion athletes racing up 50-foot trunks, spinning on floating logs, hurling seven-pound axes. Tickets run ~$80 — book direct on the show's site and pocket the difference. It's loud (chainsaws), joyful, and the most kid-approved hour in Alaska.
Split the generations
THRILL tier: the Misty Fjords floatplane (~$349, ~2 hours) — waterfall-walled fjords from 2,000 feet. EASY tier: the Saxman Native Village bus tour — totem park, carving shed, cultural performance, all seated. Both groups meet back at the ship for dinner with stories to trade.
Where to stay
Aboard — and note your cabin's side tonight. Northbound, starboard (right) faces the fjords and mainland mountains on the scenic stretches; port side gets open Pacific. Neither is wrong, but glacier mornings belong to starboard. Dinner: the main dining room — order the salmon, you're in the salmon capital.
Port: typically 7am–4pm · Totem Bight: $5 (May–Sep), $2 bus · Lumberjack Show: ~$80, covered · Misty Fjords floatplane: ~$349
Rain-day rule: Ketchikan's rain is warm and sideways — the lumberjack grandstand is covered, the totem trails are under canopy. The only excursion rain truly ruins is the floatplane (low clouds scrub flights) — keep the Saxman bus as your backup.
