Base: downtown Galena, both nights. Drive out from Chicago, about three hours, park once near Main Street and walk for the rest of the day. Main Street and its side streets are free to wander. Pace: slow: about a mile of flat walking on Main Street, plus one short, steep climb up the bluff stairs before dinner.
The drive out and a late breakfast
Leave Chicago by about 7 a.m.; the drive west to Galena takes about three hours, the last stretch on U.S. 20 through rolling farm hills that get steeper as you near the Mississippi. This corner of Illinois was never flattened by glaciers, so the land rises into wooded bluffs and deep valleys known as the Driftless Area.
Where to eat: a late breakfast at the Courtyard Restaurant inside the DeSoto House Hotel at 230 South Main Street, which calls itself Illinois’ oldest operating hotel. Breakfast starts at 7 a.m.; on winter weekdays the kitchen stops at 11 a.m., so do not dawdle on the drive.
Main Street on foot
Main Street runs in a long curve along the foot of the bluff, lined with two- and three-story brick buildings from Galena’s lead-mining heyday in the mid-1800s. Walk it end to end at an easy pace: antique shops, galleries, candy and kitchen shops, with iron balconies and old hand-lettered signs above. The side streets climb steeply to the left toward the church steeples.
Stop at the Old Market House on Commerce Street, a Greek Revival market hall built in 1845–1846, where vendors once rented twelve stalls on the ground floor. The state historic site is closed for now because of a staffing shortage, so this is an outside look at the columns and cupola.
Expert tip: walk Main Street from the north end toward the DeSoto House in the morning. The shops are just opening, the sidewalks are quiet, and the light falls on the brick fronts on the west side of the street.
An Italian lunch halfway up the hill
Where to eat: Vinny Vanucchi’s, perched halfway up a cobblestone street at Washington and Main, for a hearty Italian lunch. It opens daily at 11 a.m. and has four dining rooms, including a bistro.
After lunch, keep going on Main Street toward the south end, then look up at the Dowling House, a stone house from Galena’s earliest years that sits on a terraced slope just off Main Street. It is one of the oldest buildings in town.
A wine tasting on Main Street
In the afternoon, settle in at Galena Cellars on Main Street for a tasting. The family winery makes wines from cold-hardy grapes that grow in the upper Midwest, such as Frontenac Gris, Marquette and Chambourcin, alongside sweeter fruit wines and a honey mead.
Order a flight to share and take your time; this is the slow hour of the day. If the weather is good, walk off the tasting on the stairs: several old stairways climb from Main Street up the bluff to Bench and Prospect Streets, where the steeples are, and the view back over the roofs to the river is the picture of Galena.
Dinner for two
Where to eat: Fried Green Tomatoes, just outside downtown in a historic building, for a special dinner for two: hand-cut steaks, seafood flown in weekly and a wine list recognized by Wine Spectator. Reserve ahead for a Friday night.
After dinner, walk back along Main Street. In the evening the shop windows are lit, the street is quiet, and on a cold night the brick fronts hold a little of the day’s warmth.

Bad-weather plan
Cold rain or ice? Keep Main Street to the covered stretch near the DeSoto House, linger longer over the tasting at Galena Cellars, and skip the bluff stairs, which get slick.
Stay: downtown base · Anchor: Main Street · park once, walk
Good to know: The bluff stairways are steep and uneven; take them in daylight and skip them when they are icy.
